Battlefield 1943[6] is an online multiplayer World War II first-person shooter video game developed by EA Digital Illusions CE and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 via digital download only (similar to Battlefield Heroes). Unlike Battlefield 1942 this game takes place only in the Pacific Theater of Operations of World War II.

Overview

Battlefield 1943 has players playing as either the United States Marine Corps or the Imperial Japanese Navy with up to 24 players on mainly three classic Battlefield maps: Wake Island, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima; but after 43 million kills upon both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, an additional Dogfight only map called Coral Sea will be unlocked, while the PC version will be accessible during its release.[7]

In an interview with Game Freaks 365, developers said that accessibility and value were the main reasons the game went digital as opposed to a retail launch.

We want this game to be easily accessible to a wide audience and nothing is easier for the customer than downloading directly to the living room. The second reason we went digital is that 1943 was designed to offer the best bang for your buck. We didn't intend to replace the traditional, packaged game, but set out to create an action packed, multiplayer experience from beginning to end.[8]

Gameplay

Like Battlefield: Bad Company, 1943 features the Frostbite Engine for its environmental damage.[6][9] The game only features the series' signature Conquest mode when released.[6] Similar to Battlefield Heroes, 1943 only features three classes: An infantryman armed with a submachine gun, recoiless rifle and wrench to repair friendly vehicles. The rifleman is armed with a semi-automatic rifle equipped with rifle grenades and a bayonet, and the scout has a sniper rifle, a semi-automatic pistol, a sword and remote explosives.[6] Each class has grenades and an unlimited supply of spare ammunition, however players will still need to reload guns and explosives. The game also features a regenerating health system similar to the Call of Duty or Halo series.[6]

There are three types of vehicles in the game. Each team's base has two one-man fighter aircraft with Zeros for the Imperial Army and Corsairs for the USMC. Each team can capture a further base in the classic Maps which hold another airplane. Each airplane has a machine gun which can shoot down other airplanes and can drop bombs to destroy tanks and infantry. Tanks can accommodate two people, a driver who can use a tank round and a coaxial machine gun, and a passenger who can use a machine gun. Small boats can be used to transport at most six people across water.

Players can also call in air raids, which calls in three aircraft that can be used to bomb an area of a map. Its main aim is to destroy enemy vehicles and kill infantry. Despite an obvious advantage, these three planes can be shot down by the fighter aircraft and anti-air guns, thus reducing the amount of bombs that the air raid will drop. The AA Guns can also be used to destroy enemy fighter aircraft as well.

Release and reception

At the time of the Xbox 360 version's release, issues with server joining and statistic recording functionality were reported. DICE's Gordon Van Dyke and EA responded to the situation, noting that the player volume was higher than expected and server capacity was exceeded.[17] To remedy the issues, EA and DICE added more servers.[18][19] Van Dyke also noted that there were problems with players having trouble using their EA accounts.[20]

Despite launch problems, DICE reported that after the first day of release players had accumulated 29.45 years worth of game time and over 5 million kills.[21]

The game was given an aggregate score of 84 out of 100 from Metacritic[16] and a score of 84.18% from Game Rankings[15] for the Xbox Live version. The PlayStation Network version recieved slightly higher scores.[22][23]
