Econometrics is the study of and application of statistical theory to economics. It is used as a means to verify and empirically prove economic theory.

Economics is a varied discipline and as such different departments at different universities will have a different emphasis whether it be in course content or academic research. Econometrics is an important field within economics, and one which is waning, so it is necessary to see which departments have a strong focus for those interested.
