Shakira wrote her first song when she was eight years old and, in later years, gained some recognition around her home town Barranquilla through various events. She released her debut album Magia in 1991 at the age of thirteen. It featured four singles including "Magia" and 1,200 copies were sold, peaking at number 2 . In 1993, she released her second promotional album Peligro. Although this album was better recieved than Magia, it was considered a commercial failure.

Shakira released the single "¿Dónde Estás Corazón?" in January 1994, which peaked at number 5 in the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks. It was followed by Shakira's first official Spanish studio album Pies Descalzos, released on February 13, 1996. It debuted at number one in 8 different countries and sold 6 million copies worldwide. However, in the US Billboard 200, the album reached #180 as its peak position and number five in the US Billboard Top Latin Albums. The album spawned four furthur ultimate hit-singles: "Estoy Aquí", "Pies Descalzos, Sueños Blancos", "Un Poco de Amor", "Antología" and "Se Quiere, Se Mata". On October 21, 1997, The Remixes was released, Shakira's first compilation and remix album.

Her second Spanish studio album ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? was released on September 28, 1998. It debuted at #131 in the US and sold 10 million copies worldwide. Eight of the album's eleven tracks became singles: "Ciega, Sordomuda", "Si Te Vas", "", "Inevitable", "Octavo Día", "Moscas En La Casa", "No Creo" and "Ojos Así". Shakira's first live album MTV Unplugged was released on February 29, 2000, and reached number one in the US Hot Latin Tracks.

Shakira's first English studio album Laundry Service was released on November 13, 2001. The album became the best selling album of 2002, selling more than 20 million copies worldwide. It peaked at number three in the US, number two in the UK Albums Chart and number one in many other countries. Seven tracks became international singles: "Whenever, Wherever", "Underneath Your Clothes", "Objection (Tango)", "The One", "Poem To a Horse", "Te Dejo Madrid" and "Que Me Quedes Tú". Her second compilation album Grandes Éxitos was released after Laundry Service, on November 5, 2002, and reached number one in the US Hot Latin Tracks. This was followed by Live & off the Record, her second live album, with a DVD, released on March 30, 2004.

Fijación Oral Vol. 1 was released on June 3, 2005 as the third Spanish studio album and sold 5 million copies worldwide. It debuted at number four in the US and was certificated 2x Platinum becoming one of the best-selling Spanish albums in the country. The album had five singles: "La Tortura", "No", "Día De Enero", "La Pared" and "Las de la Intuición". Her second English lanuage studio album Oral Fixation Vol. 2 was released on November 29, 2005 and sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. The album had thrre singles: "Don't Bother", "Hips Don't Lie" and "Illegal". Oral Fixation Volumes 1&2 was released in December 2006 as a compilation of the two volumes of Oral Fixation. On November 13, 2007, after her Oral Fixation Tour, Oral Fixation Tour was released, a DVD showing some of her performances from the tour.
