"U Should've Known Betta" is the fourth and final single from R&B-singer Monica's fourth studio album After The Storm. Released in 2004, the Jermaine Dupri produced track received success with peaking at #19 on the Billboard's Hot 100.

Song information

Untill its radio release in spring 2004 the single had to go through a lot controversies. After "Knock Knock"s commercial failure in autumn 2003 it was apparently insecure, if J Records would release another single from After The Storm at all. However, in the meantime Monica herself proclaimed in several interviews, she was lookin forward to release her duet with DMX, "Don't Gotta Go Home", as a final choice, but first plans for a video were scrapped and the single was dropped.

A half year later on the All Eyez On Me leftover "U Should've Known Betta" was announced as an official single. The sultry ballad was written by Monica, Harold Lilly and Jermaine Dupri, who was able to finalize the track with help from co-producer Bryan Michael Cox. The lyrics deal with misunderstandings in a relationship, who conduce to doubts about love's veracity. Nonetheless she, Monica, promises her man, she'll stay with him, singing lines like: "It don't matter if you are up, matter if you are down, either way im gonna be around ..."

Chart performance

Opposed to both "Knock Knock" and "Get It Off" the ballad did pretty good on the charts, becoming another top 20 hit for Monica on Billboard's Hot 100, while even peaking at #6 on the R&B/Hip-Hop-Charts.

Nevertheless Usher and his concurrently released single "Burn" (another Jermaine Dupri slow jam, that boasted similarities in sytle and production) were hold responsible for the fact, the song didn't reach the top 10.
