Deaf Havana

Deaf Havana are an English post-hardcore five-piece band from Norfolk in the United Kingdom. The band was formed in 2006 at the Kings Lynn campus of The College of West Anglia. The band's early releases along with constant touring developed a strong fan base in the UK music scene. The name Deaf Havana came from their former guitarist Sebastian Spitz, but the name itself has no literal meaning.

History

Early days

Deaf Havana was formed when the original members met at at the Kings Lynn campus of The College of West Anglia. The bands roots can, however, be traced back much further with Ryan Mellor, James Amadeus Veck-Gilodi and Lee Willson all attending Smithdon High School and playing together in Various local scene bands. At college, these members were joined by Tom Ogden and Sebastian Spitz, this early lineup saw James singing with Ryan taking guitar / vocal duties.

The band quickly got down to writing songs and an early 7-track demo, titled White Lines But No Camera, was recorded August 2006 at the Lodge, Northampton. The band toured this lineup until the departure of Sebastian and the introduction of Chris Pennells, formally a member of the band "Something About Dave", who took over guitar duties. Around the same time Ryan Mellor also handed over guitar parts to James and took on a the role as front man.

Evangeline

In late 2006 the band began writing songs for their debut EP. 2 songs were roughly recorded titled "The Smiles Were Forced" and "Where It Begins" which were uploaded on to the band's myspace page; open to opinions and criticism from their rather small fanbase. The EP was soon recorded and mixed and "The Smiles Were Forced" was dropped from the EP's tracklisting. The EP saw the light of day at the beginning of 2007 with the tracklisting:

  1. "He Doesn't Know What's Coming To Him"
  2. "Where It Begins"
  3. "Tell Me More Georgie Boy"
  4. "For Stories Sake"

EP Trivia

  • Artwork and photography for the EP was done by Josh Brown who later had a song dedicated to him by the band. This song was called "Josh Brown Don't Talk To Strangers" which was actually an early demo for the song "They Call It The Easy Life", featured on "It's Called The Easy Life".
  • On the spine of the EP cover, the EP's title had been misprinted as "Evangline".
  • "For Stories Sake" was previously featured on the band's debut digital EP "White Lines But No Camera" with the slightly altered title "For The Stories Sake".
