Tarar (Template:Lang-ur) is a Punjabi tribe and Jat gotra of Northern India and in Punjab province of Pakistan.
Geographical distribution
Tarar is a "Gotra" of Jat people, meaning a sub-caste of the Jat clan. Tarars' are considered a royal caste in Punjabi circles due to their dynastic rule in the central Punjab region dating back to Mehmood Ghaznavi's invasion of India and until the Mughal rule. Today they can be found in present day Pakistani Punjab and in Indian states of Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. In Pakistan, Tarars are considered one of the most educated and well-established families in South Asia, especially among the other Jat caste groups. Currently, members of the Tarar family control large parts of bureaucracy, military, judiciary in Pakistan and playing an active role in Pakistani politics, as well. Tarar in India are mainly found in Silavar village of district Muzzafarnagar. The complete village is on the name of Tarars. People come out from here are located various part of the world and posted in good organizations. Religion
Tarars living in Pakistan are largely Muslims, while Indian Tarars are largely Hindus and Sikhs. This distribution is largely attributed to partition of the sub continent in 1947 following which Muslim Tarars living on what was to become India moved to Pakistan and vice versa. Tarars living in Pakistan are mostly of the Sunni path, but some follow the Shia path.
