Choushinsei Flashman (超新星フラッシュマン, Chōshinsei Furasshuman), translated into English as Supernova Flashman, was the tenth Super Sentai series produced by Toei Company. It also aired on TV Asahi on March 1, 1986 to February 21, 1987. This series was broadcast in Latin America under the title Star Commando Flashman (Portuguese and Spanish: Commando Estelar Flashman) and in South Korea as Earth Protector Flashman.

Storyline

In 1966, 5 children were kidnapped by the an alien group known as the Alien Hunters, for the sake of the Reconstructive Experiment Empire Mess, who wanted samples of humans from Earth to experiment on. They were rescued by the Flash alien race, which took each one to a different planet of the Flash solar system for training. Each of them was trained separately from the others in a range of superpower abilities that will allow them to fight the Reconstructive Experiment Empire Mess. When they finally return to Earth in 1986 to combat Mess, who is now trying to invade it, they use the opportunity to search for their birth parents. It is later that they learn they can only stay on Earth for one year before the now-alien atmosphere of their true planet will physically harm them (the Anti-Flash Phenomenon).

Characters

Flashmen

  • Jin (ジン, Jin)/Red Flash (レッドフラッシュ, Reddo Furasshu): He learned science on Flash Star, main planet of the Flash solar system. He has great scientific mental powers and scientific knowledge including a wealth of knowledge dealing with machinery. Kidnapped from Earth at age 3, given a scar by an Alien Hunter in the process. Since he was the oldest of the five kidnapped, his memories about the kidnapping are the strongest, although still fuzzy. He is the strongest of the team and as eldest, takes an older brother-like role, making him a strong leader. He also Appeared in GaoRanger Vs Super Sentai along with his 23 fellow Red Rangers led By Red Falcon from Liveman in which all 24 red rangers performed their respective roll calls.
    • Weapons: Prism Holy Sword (プリズム聖剣, Purizumu Seiken), Red Vul (レッドバル, Reddo Baru)

  • Dai (ダイ, Dai)/Green Flash (グリーンフラッシュ, Gurīn Furasshu): He gained great strength training on the rocky Green Star planet. He made friends with boxer Ryuu Wakakusa, who further trained him in his boxing abilities. He arms himself with brass knuckles. Although he has a cold exterior, he is actually a very warm and charming person. He has a weak spot for women, loves nature and ramen. He befriended the teenage Sumire, who had actually died some years back and had been contacting Dai through telepathy.

  • Bun (ブン, Bun)/Blue Flash (ブルーフラッシュ, Burū Furasshu): He gained speed and agility on the deserts of the Blue Star planet. He learned survival skills on the harsh planet of Blue Star, such as surviving 30 days on one cup of water and how to climb walls. He is sarcastic. As the youngest member of the team, he yearns most to find his parents.
    • Weapons: Prism Ball (プリズムボール, Purizumu Bōru), Star Darts (スターダーツ, Sutā Dātsu), Blue Vul (ブルーバル, Burū Baru)
    • Attacks: Hurricane Volt (ハリケーンボルト, Harikēn Boruto), Super Cyclone (スーパーサイクロン, Sūpā Saikuron)
  • Sara (サラ, Sara)/Yellow Flash (イエローフラッシュ, Ierō Furasshu): She developed a sharp mind on cold planet Yellow Star, often seen as cold and serious herself by most people. However, she is actually a caring person. She is able to analyze the attacks and strategies of the villains.
    • Weapons: Prism Batons (プリズムバトン, Purizumu Baton), Yellow Vul (イエローバル, Ierō Baru)

  • Lou (ルー, Rū)/Pink Flash (ピンクフラッシュ, Pinku Furasshu): She developed incredible jumping abilities on high gravity planet Pink Star. She possesses immense physical strength, which causes her to easily exhaust herself. She once mothered a Beast Warrior.
    • Weapons: Prism Boots (プリズムブーツ, Purizumu Būtsu), Pink Vul (ピンクバル, Pinku Baru)

Gear

  • Prism Flash (プリズムフラッシュ, Purizumu Furasshu): Flashman's transforming device. They transform by shouting "Prism Flash!" When the suit has been formed, they shout "Shut Goggle!" (シャットゴーグル, Shatto Gōguru) to close the visors.

Weapons

  • Prism Shooter (プリズムシューター, Purizumu Shūtā): The sidearms of the team. They can be used as laser guns or separated into swords and shields.
  • Rolling Vulcan (ローリングバルカン, Rōringu Barukan, Cosmic Vulcan): The team's finishing cannon, assembled from the five Vul weapons. When used, Yellow Flash first targets the enemy, then the vulcans begin to rapidly rotate and the shot is fire. In episode 32 it received a power up when the Flashmans` prisms were upgraded.

Vehicles

  • Flash Hawks (フラッシュホーク, Furasshu Hōku): The team's motorcycles.
  • Round Base (ラウンドベース, Raundo Bēsu): A box-like base capable of space travel. It brought the Flashmen to Earth.
  • Star Condor (スターコンドル, Sutā Kondoru): A plane-like flying fortress that carries the components of Flash King.

Mecha

  • Flash King (フラッシュキング, Furasshu Kingu): Flashman's giant robot that is formed when the command "Fusion! Flash Cross!" (合体! フラッシュクロス, Gattai Furasshu Kurosu) is given. Its main weapon is the Cosmo Sword (コズモソード, Kozumo Sōdo) and it destroys monsters with its finishing attack, the Super Cosmo Flash (スーパーコズモフラッシュ, Sūpā Kozumo Furasshu). Its other weapons are the King Shield (キングシールド, Kingu Shīrudo), King Missiles (キングミサイル, Kingu Misairu), King Knuckles (キングナックル, Kingu Nakkuru) and the King Beam (キングビーム, Kingu Bīmu). It was temporarily destroyed in episode 15 when the monster Za Zukonda caught it in a suicidal attack. It returned in episode 20 to help the Titan Boy when it was already defeated by the monster Za Bluezass.
    • Tank Command (タンクコマンド, Tanku Komando): Red Flash's mecha. It is usually on the ground, but flies for the formation of the Flash King. It forms the body and head of the Flash King. It is stored in the front of the Star Condor. It is known as Tank Command 1 in the toy. It appeared again in Gaoranger Vs Super Sentai in the fight against Rakushaasa.
    • Jet Delta (ジェットデルタ, Jetto Deruta): Green Flash and Yellow Flash's fighter jet. It forms the right limbs of the Flash King. It is stored in the rear of the Star Condor, to the right of the Jet Seeker. It is known as Jet Delta 2 in the toy.
    • Jet Seeker (ジェットシーカー, Jetto Shīkā): Blue Flash and Pink Flash's AWACS jet. It forms the left limbs of the Flash King. It is stored in the rear of the Star Condor, to the left of the Jet Delta. It is known as Jet Seeker 3 in the toy.
  • Flash Titan (フラッシュタイタン, Furasshu Taitan): A tractor-trailer-like backup mecha for the Flashman. The first secondary mecha in Sentai history. The cab and trailer can convert into an airship mode.
  • Titan Boy (タイタンボーイ, Taitan Bōi): Flashman's second robot that transforms from the tractor unit of the Flash Titan. When the command "Flash Turn! Titan Boy!" is given, the "grill" becomes the feet, the engine compartment becomes the chest, the front wheels become the legs, the back wheels become the back, the doors reveal the arms, with the smokestack areas as the shoulders, and the cabin hides the head. Its main weapons are the Radial Cutters (ラジアルカッター, Rajiaru Kattā) (formed from the tires) and the Boy Cannons (ボーイキャノン, Bōi Kyanon) (Flash Titan's smokestacks).
  • Great Titan (グレートタイタン, Gurēto Taitan): A second robot created by the union of the Titan Boy and the trailer unit of the Flash Titan. When the command "Flash Turn! Great Titan!" is given, the rear of the trailer becomes the legs, and the front part reveals the head (with the head of the Titan Boy becoming a part of it) and arms, as the wind defector swings out to become the chest. It destroys monsters with its ultimate finishing attack, the Titan Nova (タイタンノバ, Taitan Noba).

Allies

  • Mag (マグ, Magu): A robot programmed by the aliens of the Flash Star to assist the Flashman. He upgrades the prisms in their helmets to give them stronger prism weapons when the Mess officers power up.
  • Dr. Tokimura (時村博士, Tokimura-hakase): A scientist and father of family, one of his children was abducted 20 years by the Alien Hunters. Because the Alien Hunters blurred his memories of the event, he has created a time machine in order to return to that time to find out more information regarding the events. He helps the Flashman with his inventions. In the last episodes, he discovers that Sara is his daughter.
  • Setsuko Tokimura (時村節子, Tokimura Setsuko): Dr. Tokimura's wife.
  • Hero Titan (英雄・タイタン, Eiyū Taitan): A legendary warrior of the Flash Stars. He is the one who the Flash aliens based their Flashman technology and mecha after. He was an honorable soldier who tracked down Mess from planet to planet in order to stop them. As a result of his travels away from the Flash system, he developed the Anti-Flash Phenomenon and died while in battle with Baraki.
  • Ley Baraki (レー・バラキ, Rē Baraki): The first creation of Lee Keflen. He fought with Hero Titan and was saved by him; in awe of the legendary warrior's courage and honor, decided to defect from Mess and promised the dying Titan that he would deliver the Flash Titan when it was needed. Therefore, he fell into a slumber aboard the Flash Titan, who followed the Star Condor when it arrived to Earth, lying dormant until it was needed...

Mess

The Reconstructive Experiment Empire Mess (改造実験帝国メス, Kaizō Jikken Teikoku Mesu) takes over planets, using their lifeforms as fodder for its experiments. Their goal is to transform its leader Ra Deus into the strongest being in the universe.

  • Great Emperor Ra Deus (大帝ラー・デウス, Daitei Rā Deusu) (1-47): The big, immobile leader of the Reconstructive Experiment Empire Mess who sought to become the ultimate lifeform. He could fire energy shots from his fingers to punish his officers. Before the finale, after Kaura and Gardan dismantled Ra Deus, Ra Deus was transformed by Keflen into the mobile Za Deusula (ザ・デウスーラ, Za Deusūra, 49) being being destroyed by the Flashman with only his broken mask left as Keflen took it to extract its DNA for his final creation.
  • Great Doctor Lee Keflen (大博士リー・ケフレン, Dai Hakase Rī Kefuren): Originally from Earth 300 years ago, Keflen was abducted by Deus who transformed and educated to be his right-hand man and creator the empire's Beast Warriors. However, the centuries gave Keflen a god complex as he turns his back on Deus to become the ruler of Mess. He offers the Flashman a chance to operate on them to repair their Anti-Flash Phenomenon in exchange for his life in the finale. The Flashman refused and he was killed as he unleashed his final creation on them.
  • Ley Wanda (レー・ワンダ, Rē Wanda) (1-47): A winged, zebra-like swordsman full of pride and over confidence. He believes himself to be a superior being, but is disgusted once he learns from Keflen that he was made by Keflen, consisting of five grotesque and ordinary creatures. Later powered up as the monster Wandarla, in which he possessed the power to stop time for exactly 3 seconds. By combining his powers with a Beast Warrior he could stop time in an area for indefinte amount of time. He challenged Red Flash to a final duel to prove his strength after losing his power and was eventually destroyed.
  • Ley Nefel (レー・ネフェル, Rē Neferu): A leopard-like and loyal soldier, Nefel was among Keflen's first creations and thus saw him as a father figure. She was able to disguise herself as human and spy. She is cunning and cruel. She was later powered up in order to transform into the monster, Nefelura. She was stabbed to death by Red Flash while protecting Keflen in the finale.
  • Ley Galus (レー・ガルス, Rē Garusu) (1-28): A big and strong commander made up of genes of wild beasts. This monster does not talk but roars a lot while fighting the Flashman.
  • Wolk and Kilt (ウルク&キルト, Uruku to Kiruto) (1-45): The assistants of Nefel which are derived from a wolf and a cat, both lovers. Kilt was later turned into the Deus Beast Warrior Za Kiltoss (ザ・キルトス, Za Kirutosu) by Wanda, later absorbing Wolk into it. Kiltoss' power came from its ability to sacrifice its claw to block any major attack and regenerate them by draining the youth of living things. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Sir Cowler (サー・カウラー, Sā Kaurā) (15-48): The leader of the Alien Hunters, Cowler was the one who kidnapped the five infants who grew up into the Flashman team. He rebels once Mess keep considering him an outsider, despite the success he has brought them. He was killed by Red Flash.
  • Bo Gardan (ボー・ガルダン, Bō Garudan) (43-48): The assistant leader of the Alien Hunters. He is armed with a pair of steel sticks. He was involuntarily mutated by Keflen into the Deus Beast Warrior Za Gardess (ザ・ガルデス, Za Garudesu, 48), able to fire energy bolts from its staff. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Alien Hunters (エイリアンハンター, Eirian Hantā) (15-48): They are a gang of bounty hunters who worked most for Mess in rounding up lifeforms for them to experiment on. They are Baura, Hag, Kerao, Hou, and one unnamed member. Baura is armed with a huge scythe, Hag is armed with a bow and arrow, Kerao is armed with a laser gun and Hou is armed with a pair of boomerangs. Kerao was eaten alive by Za Gitan while Baura, Hag and Hou were transformed by Keflen into the monster Za Taffmoss.
  • Zolors (ゾロー, Zorō): The foot soldiers of Mess, green-eyed, red-skinned insectoid grunts. They spray strings from their mouths, which causes victims to disappear.
  • Kuragen (クラーゲン, Kurāgen): A jellyfish-like monster that enlarges the empire's monsters after they are defeated in human size.

Beast Warriors

The Beast Warriors (獣戦士, Jū Senshi) are chimeric enties produced through the genetic manipulation of earth animals' aducted by Mess having their makeup spliced with alien DNA. The Beast Warriors are created by Keflen through an instrument called the Gene Synthesizer (遺伝子シンセサイザー, Idenshi Shinsesaizā).

  • Za Baraboss (ザ・バラボス, Za Barabosu) (1)First Genetic Beast Warrior Of Earth. The creature's pale-white body looked like the flattened head of an elephant, with a pair of red eyes on its chest. The top of its body opened with a gaping, fanged maw where the head should have been, and the maw was filled with a clump of red, leathery orbs. Tendrils extended from the odd creature's shoulders. It had an elephant's strength and organic bombs.
  • Za Zululuk (ザ・ズルルク, Za Zururuku) (2): This was the first monster destroyed by the Flash King.
  • Za Garagoss (ザ・ガラゴス, Za Garagosu, 1st Movie): A cyclopean chrimera created from a dog augmented with the genetic structure of a cheetah, a gorilla, a spider, a hawk, and a dolphin. Possessing its components' strengths, this monster was sent after the Flashmen without relent, countering their unique skills with relative ease until they discover it is deathly afraid of puppies when Garagoss is chased off by Pochi, the child of the dog used to create Garagoss. As a result, Mess sents its forces to kill the puppy so this monster can fight effectively. With Jin and Pochi seemingly dead, this monster attacks the other Flaahmen without mercy until Red Flash arrives without Pochie. Using the Flash Hawks to overwhlem the Beast Warrior, the Flashmen defeat Garagoss with Rolling Vulcan. After Kuragen revives this monster into a giant, the monster was destroyed by the Flash King.
  • Za Zaimoss (ザ・ザイモス, Za Zaimozu) (3) Created from the genes of a dead Alien Hunter, this monster really had the Flashman on the run but it too was destroyed and enlarged by Kuragen.
  • Za Girai (ザ・ギーライ, Za Gīrai) (4) Created by splicing a tortoise's D.N.A. with a Space Turtles who is always upside down. This monster is able too turn living beings cornea upside down along with their sight. By learning to fight with their eyes covered, the Flashman did away with this monster.
  • Za Gerzoll (ザ・ゲルゾル, Za Geruzoru) (5)

  • Za Gariblue (ザ・ガリブル, Za Gariburu) (7)

  • Za Powablue (ザ・パワブル, Za Pawaburu) (11): Hatched from an egg, this gentle-natured monster befriended Lou, whom he imprinted to be his mother. But when wounded in an attempt to protect her from Mess, Powablue was recovered by Keflen who wiped out the creature's memories and reprogramed it to be a true Beast Warrior. This monster was finally destroyed by the Flash King, leaving Lou deeply saddened.

  • Za Mashirass (ザ・マシラス, Za Mashirasu) (14)
  • Za Zukonda ([ザ・ズコンダ Za Zukonda] Error: {{nihongo}}: text has italic markup (help)) (15-16, 24): This is the monster brought by Kaura and his Alien Hunters in their first appearance. This monster fought in pairs and destroyed the Flash King through a suicidal attack. This monster returned and locked Sara in a small capsule.
  • Za Jiraika (ザ・ジライカ, Za Jiraika) (17-18): This monster was released by Kaura. This monster could release bombs from its abdomen and energy bolts from its eyes. This was the first monster destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Za Drake (ザ・ドレイク, Za Doreiku) (19): This monster has eyes located under its mouth. This monster could release energy strings from its fingers in order to control its victims like a puppet. This monster was used by Kaura to control Baraki in order to kill Jin. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Za Bluezass (ザ・ブルザス, Za Buruzasu)) (20): This monster was released by Ley Nefel. This monster could release spikes to disintegrate its victims. This monster defeated the Titan Boy but was destroyed by the Flash King.
  • Za Zobalda (ザ・ゾバルダ, Za Zobaruda) (21): A double-headed monster.
  • Za Argoss (ザ・アルゴス, Za Arugosu) (22)
  • Za Nenjiki (ザ・ネンジキ, Za Nenjiki) (23): This monster was used by Nefel to grant peoples' wishes, but it turns its victims into evil. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Za Dapirass (ザ・ダピラス, Za Dapirasu) (25)
  • Za Grumess (ザ・グルメス, Za Gurumesu) (26): This monster was released by Nefel. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Za Jagan (ザ・ジャガン, Za Jagan) (27)
  • Za Sworduss (ザ・ソードス, Za Sōdosu) (29): This monster was released by Wanda. This one-eyed monster has spikes all over its body and it has two swords as its hands. This monster could also fire a beam on its eye. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Za Gammell (ザ・ガンメル, Za Ganmeru) (30)
  • Za Gostero (ザ・ゴステロ, Za Gosutero) (31)
  • Za Binon (ザ・ビーノン, Za Bīnon) (32): This monster was released by Nefel. Tthis monster could turn objects invisible. This monster could also release invisible bombs. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.

  • Za Zeragill (ザ・ゼラギル, Za Zeragiru) (38) : This monster was released by Kaura. This monster with four faces on its chest turned all the Flashman (with the single exception of Jin) into evil puppets in order to kill Jin (his mindspell was broken only by combinating Jin's and Wanda's swords). This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Za Menonga (ザ・メノンガ, Za Menonga) (39)
  • Za Zegull (ザ・ゼーグル, Za Zēguru) (40)
  • Za Bucross (ザ・ブクロス, Za Bukurosu) (41): This monster was released by Ley Wanda. This monster uses a cloak in order to turn its victims into little children and torment them through any bad memories from their pasts. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Za Descon (ザ・デスコン, Za Desukon) (42)
  • Za Gitan (ザ・ギータン, Za Gītan) (43): This monster was released by Ley Wanda. This monster ate Kerao alive and it caused Kaura to rebel against Mess. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.

Deus Beast Warriors

The Deus Beast Warriors (デウス獣戦士, Deusu Jū Senshi) are the later monsters which have superior genes from Ra Deus himself.

  • Za Taffmoss (ザ・タフモス, Za Tafumosu) (44): This monster was released by Ley Nefel. This six-armed monster was the combined form of Baura, Hag and Hou and armed with all of their weapons.
  • Za Nefuluss (ザ・ネフルス, Za Nefurusu) (46): This was the personal monster of Ley Nefel, created from her own DNA. It could explode and then be reformed by Ley Nefel. Later when they learned that Ley Nefel could keep reviving Za Nefuluss Red Flash turned his sights on her. After Red Flash injured Nefel, Keflen had to summon Kuragen.
  • Za Wandall (ザ・ワンダル, Za Wandaru) (47): This was the personal monster of Ley Wanda. This monster was created by mixing his DNA with Ra Deus. This monster and Wandarla was able to stop time in a mile radius indefinetly. This monster also constructed an unbreakable wall that the Flashman could not break thru thus leaving RedFlash who got caught in the TimeFreeze helpless. But when Doctor Tokimura's son attempted to go back thru time for his Father the Time Ripple shattered the Dome breaking Red Flash free of the Time Freeze. This monster was destroyed by the Great Titan.
  • Za Demoss (ザ・デーモス, Za Dēmosu) (50): This final monster was created by Keflen using the broken mask of Za Deusula. This three-legged monster absorbed the energy of Flash King and managed to defeat it. However, the monster was destroyed from overload from attempting to absorb the limitless energy of Great Titan.
