The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place in Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Comedian Russell Brand will be hosting the event for the second time in a row. Janet Jackson will make a special appearance at the VMAs to pay musical tribute to her late brother Michael Jackson and honor his career.[1]

On August 4, the nominees were announced. Beyoncé and Lady Gaga lead the pack with 9 nominations each, followed by Britney Spears with 7, Coldplay, Eminem, and Kanye West with 4 each.[2]

VMA artists will also perform at a MTV/Time Warner Cable/ VMA weekend pre-party and competition at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza on September 11. Having narrowed over 190 New York City bands down to the top 3, those three will compete in front of top MTV VMA talent for the "The Best Breakout New York City Artist Award".[3] The competition will take place in between performances from VMA artists including Fefe Dobson and Cobra Starship.[4][5] The battle of the bands will be between the all-female pop/folk/rock harmony trio "The Shells" (Jessica Rae Waltz, Carrie Welling, and Melanie Klaja),[6][7] the rock quartet "MeTalkPretty," and the rock quartet "Red Directors".[8] The winning band will be revealed the night of the VMAs, and showcased nationally on MTV2.[9]
