The R42, built in 1969-1970 was the last 60' [[[IND]]-BMT cars in the New York Subway until the R143 in 2001. They are similar to the R40M. These were the first fully air conditioned car class in the NYC subway.

They are numbered 4550-4949.

They are found mainly on the BMT Eastern Divsion (J, M, L, Z lines) and some on the Coney Island BMT routes.
