WGLQ is an FM radio station serving the central portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. WGLQ broadcasts at a frequency of 97.1 megahertz and its studios and offices are located on Ludington Ave in Escanaba, Michigan. The station airs an adult-leaning Top 40 (CHR) format. WGLQ's transmitter is located 30 miles north of Escanaba near the town of Trenary, and broadcasts from an antenna 1,070 feet in heights. WGLQ transmits its signal from the same tower that WJMN Channel 3 Escanaba broadcasts from.

History

The station first signed on in 1976 as WKZY-FM, playing beautiful music and then evolving into an adult contemporary format as "Z97", and then back to beautiful music. On April 26, 1982, the call letters were changed to WGLQ, and the format became CHR as "The Rhythm of the Great Lakes." Magic 97 was a "live-assist" station with TM Programming's Stereo Rock format for a time, then converted to fully local programming in the late 1980s.

As CHR stations go, WGLQ is quite conservative, because of the perceived aversion of many Upper Peninsula advertisers to hip-hop and rap music. The station's playlist is heavily dayparted, with "urban" and rhythmic contemporary product played mostly at night (when the station features "Nudge at Night" from Dial Global's Hits Now! network) and on syndicated shows such as "Open House Party," hosted by John Garabedian and American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest (CHR version). The station often resembles a Hot Adult Contemporary format during the daytime while being a CHR format at night. For many years Magic 97 featured Mike Harvey's Supergold oldies request show on Saturday nights, but this was dropped around 2000 for Open House Party.

The station serves Escanaba, Iron Mountain, Marquette and Munising in the central Upper Peninsula. The station can also be reached as far south as Peshtigo, WI and across Lake Michigan as far east as Traverse City, MI and Ludington, MI; when conditions are right, its signal can be heard east to the Mackinac Bridge.
