The 2009 Giro d'Italia was the 92nd running of the Giro d'Italia, one of cycling's Grand Tours. It marked the 100th year since the first edition of the race. It was held from 9–31 May 2009. It started in Venice and finished in Rome.[2]

The centenary Giro was raced on a unique and difficult path through Italy, visiting some historic sites in Italian cycling. Every city that hosted a stage start or finish in the first Giro d'Italia was visited in this Giro with the exception of Genoa, though Arenzano (in the province of Genoa) hosted the finish to stage 11. The eleventh stage also went over the Passo del Turchino, a climb used every year in Milan-Sanremo.

The tenth and the sixteenth stages were both called the race's queen stage, each with many high mountain climbs and the winning times to both totalling almost fourteen hours.

Denis Menchov won the race, having taken the lead in a long time trial in stage 12, and marked closely any attacks by his closest challenger, Danilo Di Luca, during the mountain stages of the last week.[3]

On 22 July, it was announced that Di Luca's A-samples tested positive for CERA on 20 May and 28 May.[4] The analysis of the B-samples from those controls confirmed the initial results.[5]

Twenty-two teams were announced for the Giro. These included fifteen ProTour teams, and seven Professional Continental teams. The Astana team did not include 2008 race champion Alberto Contador, who chose not to defend his championship,[10] but did include the returning Lance Armstrong.[11] Though his appearance was put in doubt after he crashed out of Stage 1 of the Vuelta a Castilla y León and broke his collarbone, Armstrong announced on April 16 that he would indeed start the Giro despite undergoing surgery for his injury.[12] Silence-Lotto star Cadel Evans was originally announced to be taking part in the Giro,[13] but he shortly afterward publicly announced that he would not ride it, and accused the race organizers of using his name to promote the event.[14] Contador and Evans both chose to focus on the Tour de France later in the season.

Many riders were named as favorites, including Ivan Basso, Levi Leipheimer, Armstrong, Damiano Cunego, Carlos Sastre, Gilberto Simoni, Danilo Di Luca, Marzio Bruseghin, and Denis Menchov.[15] It was also noted that three time trials, including the insertion of an unusually long time trial mid-race, might favor a rider such as Leipheimer.[16] Former winner Stefano Garzelli named Leipheimer as the favorite.[17]

Only a small number of stages were meant to end in a sprint, barring a successful breakaway. Premier sprinters in the event included Alessandro Petacchi, Mark Cavendish, Allan Davis, Robert Hunter, Tyler Farrar, Robert Förster, and Juan José Haedo.

The tenth stage was planned to exactly mimic a stage from the 1949 Giro d'Italia, in homage to the winner of that stage Fausto Coppi, but the race organizers were forced to alter it to cover only the Italian side of the Alps rather than also visit France, as there were concerns over the availability of radio communication in the area.[9] It was subsequently made even longer than first planned, with additional, smaller climbs added.

Menchov was fifth after Alpe di Siusi, but had risen to second before Stage 12, the very long, very irregular individual time trial in Cinque Terre. There, he claimed a convincing victory, with only Levi Leipheimer within a minute of his winning time, and Di Luca nearly two minutes back of him to finish sixth on the stage and fall to second overall, with Menchov assuming the race lead.[27] The remaining mountain stages saw Di Luca try repeatedly to shed Menchov to make up the time had in deficit to him, which was never more than a minute. They were involved in sprints for time bonuses at the finish line in Stage 16[28] and Stage 17,[29] as well as an intermediate sprint in Stage 20.[30] Menchov consistently got the better of Di Luca, and with his superior time trialing skills he was able to emerge as Giro champion.[31]

Stefano Garzelli was the winner of the King of the Mountains competition, gaining points for consistent high placings on the summit stage finishes, as well as a brief successful breakaway on the mountainous Stage 10. The points classification was won by Di Luca, as there were eight road stages in which Di Luca finished in the top ten. The youth classification was won by Kevin Seeldraeyers, who remained consistent after Thomas Lövkvist, who for a day even led the general classification, lost tremendous time on Stage 16.[31]

Success in stages was limited to a few teams. Though there were nearly as many stages (21) as teams in the event (22), only eight teams ultimately came away with stage victories. Six different riders themselves won multiple stages – Cavendish, Petacchi, Menchov, Di Luca,[25][32] Carlos Sastre,[28][33] and Michele Scarponi.[34][35] Stage wins were also claimed by teammates of Cavendish, Sastre, and Scarponi. They are used by a number of templates and pages on Wikipedia. winning the Trofeo Fast Team upped the count to 11 teams coming away with a significant prize, but this still meant that half the teams in the race came away with nothing of substance to show for their participation.

Just less than two months after the event concluded, on 22 July, second place overall finisher and points classification winner Di Luca was announced to have given two positive tests for continuous erythropoietin receptor activator (CERA, an erythropoietin derivative), before the Cinque Terre time trial and before the Mount Vesuvius stage in the race's last week. He was provisionally suspended with immediate effect by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling's governing body.[4] On 8 August, analysis of his B-samples from those controls confirmed the initial results.[5] Di Luca maintains his innocence and claims a conspiracy against him by the labs handling the tests.[38][39]

Classification leadership

In the 2009 Giro d'Italia, four different jerseys were awarded. For the general classification, calculated by adding the finishing times of the stages per cyclist, and allowing time bonuses for the first three finishers on mass start stages, the leader received a pink jersey. This classification is considered the most important of the Giro d'Italia, and the winner of the general classification is considered the winner of the Giro.[40]

Additionally, there was also a points classification, indicated with a mauve jersey. In the points classification, cyclists got points for finishing in the top 15 in a stage. The stage win awarded 25 points, second place awarded 20 points, third 16, fourth 14, fifth 12, sixth 10, and one point less per place down the line, to a single point for fifteenth. In addition, some points could be won in intermediate sprints.[40]

There was also a mountains classification, indicated with a green jersey. In the mountains classifications, points are won by reaching the top of a mountain before other cyclists. Each climb was categorized, either first, second, or third-category, with more points available for the higher-categorized climbs. The highest point in the Giro, or the Cima Coppi, which in 2009 was Sestrière in Stage 10,[41] afforded still more points than the other first-category climbs.[40]

The fourth classification was the young rider classification, calculated the same way as the general classification, but with only riders born on or after 1 January 1984 eligible. The leader of the young rider classification received a white jersey.[40]

There were also two classification for teams. The first is the Trofeo Fast Team. In this classification, the times of the best three cyclists per stage are added, and the team with the lowest time is leading team. The Trofeo Super Team is a team points classification, with the top 20 placed riders on each stage earning points (20 for first place, 19 for second place and so on, down to a single point for twentieth) for their team. The Giro also awards numerous other classifications which are not represented by a jersey.[40]

If a cyclist leads two or more competitions at the end of a stage, he receives all those jerseys. The next stage, he can only wear one jersey, and he wears the jersey representing leadership in the most important competition (pink first, then mauve, then green, then white).
