The National Sports Journalism Center is a journalism program run by Indiana University and a resource center for sports media professionals. The center, based at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, [1] currently offers undergraduate-level sports journalism courses and plans on offering graduate-level sports journalism courses in January 2010 and, hopefully, a full-fledged master's degree program by Fall 2010. [2]
The center, founded in early 2009, also hosts events on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. It held its first event, a forum on the effects of hype and evolving media pressures on sports reporting, in March 2009. [3] It held a second panel discussion on diversity in the sports media industry in September 2009 [4]
Former Chicago Tribune sports editor Tim Franklin leads the center, which also includes instructors William F. "Billy" Reed, former Sports Illustrated senior writer; and Pamela Laucella, author of Jesse Owens, the Press and the 1936 Berlin Olympics and co-author of Strategic Sport Communication.
The center is also home to the Associated Press Sports Editors, [5] the nation's largest sports media organization.
