Istihsan is an Arabic term for juristic preference and is one of the methods of reasoning for understanding the sources of shariah and itjihad.

Many proponents of liberal movements within Islam have used it as an ethical principle to favour feminist and reformist interpretations of the Qur'an and thus reform Islamic law.
