Presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Tunisia on October 25, 2009[1]. Preliminary results released on October 26 indicated a landslide victory for incumbent President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Candidates
There were four candidates in the presidential election:
- Incumbent Zine El Abidine Ben Ali (Constitutional Democratic Rally)
- Ahmed Ibrahim (Movement Ettajdid)
- Mohamed Bouchiha (Party of People's Unity)
- Ahmed Inoubli (Unionist Democratic Union)
Results

Partial results covering ten of Tunisia's 26 constituencies were released by the interior ministry on Monday October 26. These results indicated that incumbent President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali had received approximately 90 per cent of the vote, ensuring his fifth consecutive term in office.[2]
Figures released at 1500 GMT (two hours before the close of polling) indicated about 84 per cent voter turnout.
