Lazar Mathew

Dr. Lazar Mathew, a specialist in high altitude medicine, is currently the Director of the School of Biosciences and Technology,Vellore Institute of Technology.

History

Dr. Mathew obtained a Bachelors of Veterinary Science degree from Kerala Veterinary College, Mannuthy in 1964, a Master of Science degree in Medical Physiology from the University of Mysore, and a Ph.D. from Delhi University.

He was instrumental in establishing the High Altitude Medical Research Centre at Leh.

After six years of teaching, he joined the Defence Research & Development Organisation where he worked in various capacities for over 31 years. He was Director of Life Sciences at DRDO Head Quarters, Director at the Defence Bio-Engineering and Medical Laboratory at Bangalore, and Director of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences at Delhi. After retirement from DRDO he joined St. Francis Hospital Ajmer as Director in 2001 Recently, he has joined Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore -632014.

Research and papers

Dr. Mathew has 194 research publications and 6 technical books to his credit. He has received 12 Research Awards including the "Scientist of the Year Award" from Ministry of Defence in 1996. He was instrumental in organising the "Society for Biomedical Technology" and Dr.Mathew was its Chief Executive for 6 years. During this period, he developed a number of medical equipment and devices which are currently in the market. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Biomedical Scientists (FABMS); a Fellow of International Medical Sciences Academy (FIMSA); and a Fellow of Indian Medical Sciences Academy (FAMS).

He is the guide for doctoral scholars of Biomedical Engineering, Gideon Praveen Kumar & Sudesh who are working on medical implants design under his esteemed guidance. His most-cited papers include:
