Elahi Bux Soomro or Illahi Bukhsh Soomro (Born 15 May 1926), is a Pakistani Senior politician and legislator. He was the 16th Speaker of National Assembly of Pakistan. He is from influential political family of Sindh. He held several federal ministries, including portfolios of Ministry of Industries and Production, Ministry of Housing & Works, Ministry of Defence Production, Ministry of IT, Ministry of Science & Technology, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. He is one of few politicians who have been very close to President and Prime Minister Of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. He has been a close and old friend of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, favourite of Zia-ul-Haq for the post of Prime Minister, and a very close aide to Nawaz Sharif and Ghulam Ishaq Khan. He was almost appointed to the position of Prime Minister at numerous times in the 1980s, but never succeeded.

Family

His Father Khan Bahadur Haji Moula Bux Soomro had been Central and Provincial Minister, and Senior adviser to President Zia ul Haq, who played an important role in Zia Regime. His Uncle Khan Bahadur Allah Bux Soomro was the first Chief Minister of Sindh, and served twice. His cousin Rahim Bux Soomro was Minister Sindh. His Nephew, Muhammad Mian Soomro, served twice as chairman Senate of Pakistan, Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan, Interim President of Pakistan and Governor of Sindh. He has two Sons, Zubyr and Nusyr, and a Daughter, married to cousin of Abida Hussain and Fakhar Imam, a great political figures. He is a great family guy, has 5 Grandsons, Maula Bux Soomro, Taha Soomro, Taimur Soomro, Omair Soomro, and Syed Gibran.

Civil Servant

He had been Director General of Karachi Development Authority, Managing Director of S.I.T.E, Rector of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, and above of all he has made a record of becoming four times Chairman of Pakistan Engineering Council, each for three year term.

Appointments as Prime Minister

He was nominated for the post for Prime Minister, in 1985, by Zia-ul-Haq. But, he didn't become because of PML's President opposed him, by appointing Junejo. Again, when there was dictator rule, he was said to become Prime Minister if he gets elected, in 2002 election. Musharraf wanted him to be Prime Minister, if he gets elected. But he didn't.

Political Affiliation

He belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League (N) political party . He was preceded by Yousaf Raza Gillani.
