Cowboys & Indians, The Premier Magazine of the West is an American magazine devoted to showcasing and celebrating all elements of the Western lifestyle. "As with the American West," says publisher Gregory L. Brown, "the story of this magazine has been one of growth and expansion." From the very beginning, "we have focused on everything exceptional about the American West: history and legend, hardworking people, dramatic vistas, enduring values. And as the West has evolved to mean more than cowboys and Indians, we have expanded the scope of the magazine, reflecting all the West has come to signify to an ever-growing number of people who regard it as not merely a geographic locale, but also a state of mind and a way of life."[1]
Founded in 1992 as a Santa Fe-based quarterly publication by Robert Hartman, Cowboys & Indians has significantly expanded since its purchase in 2000 by the Houston-based USFR Media Group. Editorial offices are located in Dallas, where Margaret L. Brown has served as executive editor since August 2002.[2] Published eight times a year, the magazine has recently run cover-story profiles of Hugh Jackman, Viggo Mortensen, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Tom Selleck, Trisha Yearwood, Sam Elliott, Ted Turner, William Shatner and several other notables with strong ties to the American West or the Western lifestyle. Each issue also contains articles on Western fashion and collectibles, Old West history, Western art, travel, fine dining, music, film and Native American art and culture
Cowboys & Indians currently enjoys an international circulation of 158,407, with an average readership of 823,716.[3] The magazine's website was redesigned and expanded in April 2009, to offer readers a generous sampling of material from the print edition -- everything from personality profiles and Western fashion spreads to lifestyle features and real estate listings -- along with content created especially for the web.[4]
