Ivanovo State University is the oldest and one of the most famous universities of Ivanovo Oblast, located in Ivanovo, about 300 km from Moscow, Russia. The University was founded in 1918 and now has one of the best resources, faculty and students among the classical universities of Russia. Before 1974 had the name Ivanovo State Pedagogical Institute.
The university was founded and still remains the leading institution in humanities, social sciences and theory of mathematics and physics. The traditional scope of interests of the university included languages, history, philosophy as well as biology, mathematics and physics. Following the transformation of Soviet economy it was the first university in the region that started to offer "untypical" for the Soviet education system degrees in economics (1976), law, sociology and applauded programming.
ISU has the state accreditation and license from the Russian Ministry of Education. It is a member of Euroasian association of universities and Association of Russian universities, co-operates with educational institutions of Germany (Passau University and the Berlin Technical University), Sweden (University of Uppsala), Danmark (Aarhus University, Institute of Business and Technology in Herning) and China (Xiangtan University) among many others. The trining of foreing citizens has sturted in 60's with the programs for developing countries. In 1982 the Department of Russian as a foreing language was created were various modes of study practice were implemented to prepare foreign students to study on Russian language.
ISU has different types of programs from traditional five years specialist degree to for year bachelor and two years masters following the modernization of Russian education system and Bologna Process. Also, the university has 10 specialized councils that grant the degree of Kandidat nauk (Ph.D. equivalent) as well as postgraduate degree of Doktor Nauk in the fields of history, technical science, linguistics, philosophy and economics. Today, the university has more than 5000 undergraduate and more than 190 graduate students. ISU is also a great opportunity for the postgraduate research as well as for Russian Language and preparatory non-degree programs.
The university joins 450 professors, 70 of them - have a title of doktor nauk, more than 250 - kandidat nauk. Many outstanding scientists worked there at various times: biologist S.N.Bogoljubsky (the first rector of institute), mathematicians N.N.Luzin, A.J.Hinchin, D.E. Menshov, A.I. Maltsev, physicists A.I.Nekrasov, R.V.Kunitsky, V.S.Sorokin, historians D.M.Petrushevsky, A.A.Kizevetter, A.Z.Manfred, A.P.Kazhdan, writers N.F.Belchikov, D.E.Maksimov and others.
