Viva Macau is a long-haul, low-cost carrier based in the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. The airline was the first low-cost, long-haul airline in the world[1] and this business model has since been emulated by Jetstar Airways of Australia and AirAsia X of Malaysia. The airline currently operates flights to Australasia and South-East Asia from its hub in Macau International Airport. [1]
History
In 1994, the Macau Government attracted a consortium of investors to start Air Macau with the promise of a 25 year monopoly concession. The carrier quickly set up as a connecting airline for flights between China and other South-East Asian countries. [1]
Con Korfiatis, a former head-hunter for a COO/CFO, wanted to promote Macau as an international destination in its own right, rather than just a connecting point and so he decided to set up his own airline, Viva Macau. The government agreed to the new airline on the condition that any routes Viva Macau wants to operate, Air Macau has to first approve the route. [1]
In December 2006, Viva Macau began operations with two leased 767s with inaugural services to Malé in the Maldives and Jakarta in Indonesia. However, aircraft shortages, Macau’s regulatory system and high oil prices led to the CEO leaving the company just six months after its launch. Con Korfiatis stayed with the company and was joined by Ngan In Leng who is currently the chairman. [1]
Due to Macau’s limited workforce, the company employs staff from 30 different countries.
Fleet
Viva Macau currently operates following aircraft (as of 1 September 2009): [1] [2]
Aircraft | In Service | On Order | Passengers | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Boeing 767-200ER | 1 | 0 | 210 | B-MAV, ex Aeroméxico |
Boeing 767-300 | 1 | 0 | 245 | B-MAW, ex PBair |
Boeing 767-300ER | 1 | 0 | 245 | B-MAY, ex Air Niugini |
Acquisition of more aircraft is planned, building up to a fleet of 10-15 aircraft within five years.
Cabin
Viva Macau operates a two class service – Economy Class and Premium Class. Checked luggage is free for all passengers and Economy offers 32 inches of seat pitch and a buy-on-board meal service. Premium passengers receive 50 inches of seat pitch and free meals. [1]
Partners
The de-facto national carrier of Macau, Air Macau, has concluded a licensing agreement which allows Viva Macau to operate (since Air Macau owns the air-traffic rights to destinations that Viva Macau intends to fly to). In addition, Viva Macau is negotiating further co-operation with Air Macau in the form of joint marketing or code-sharing. The two airlines are not expected to compete with each other while Air Macau continues to concentrate on short-haul full-service routes, especially domestic flights to China and Taiwan.
Destinations
In its short history Viva Macau has changed its destinations depending on consumer demand. As of July 08, the airline is flying to Sydney, Ho Chi Minh and Jakarta. The airline also operates a number of charter flights to Japan, including Tokyo. It's likely that their routes will be expanded in the near future. [1]

★warning! cheap is a trap!
Please carefully to recommend Viva Macau!your recommendation might let many people have heavy losses!
★1.Our bad experience with Viva Macau ◆they have no formal staff at other cooperative airports, whatever happens, you only can get an E-mail address from Macao side.
we bought the ticket from Tokyo to Macau(01/11/2009 21:00),then from Macau transfer to Jakarta(02/11/2009 09:00).but what happend to us? On 30th of october,we were told the flight from Macau to Jakarta was canceled, without any reason!they told us either wait for the next flight on 4th of November,or buy other tickets from other company.we had an important meeting in Jakarta on third of NOV,so we had to choose to buy other tickets from Air Asia, and canceled the original flight from Viva Macau. But that's just the beginning of nightmare!!!!!!!! At 19:30 of November first,When we arrived at the airport, couldn't find any flight information of Viva Macau.. There was a passenger told us the flight from Tokyo to Macau was canceled,Without any prior notice!!such a big shock!!we couldn't find any staff of Viva Macau, and their phone was always busy, some staff of Narita airport said they had no idea of this.we were so angry and so unassisted.we had to stay at an hotel which was very costly,of course we paid it our own. There were around 15 passengers had the same bad experience as us. It's obvious that we have missed Air Aisa, and no information updates of Viva Macau, finally we were told by a passenger, the next flight would be on the next day at the same time. We had to spend two nights in Macau, paid the hotel our own.couldn't face to any staff of Viva Macau. When i think about all my losses,i only want to say fucking Viva Macau,if someone here is working for this faithless company, you should feel shame!
★2.How about Viva Macau?what is Viva Macau? ◆Very often, they inform you the flight delay or cancel only when you go to check in.they are exploiting legal loopholes and consider all the passengers are mindless.
I've checked on internet, the big shock was that during two years, they have canceled numerous flights without any reason or any notice before,Macau Daily has reported these abominable affairs several times, and so many complaints from internet in chinese. ——12/03/2007,the flight from Macau to Maldives was canceled, some passenger lost at least 2000 Euro hotel expenses; ——04/07/2007,same flight from Macau to Maldives was canceled, passengers had a very unhappy honeymoon.(http://tieba.baidu.com/f?kz=209605181) ——19/08/08,the flight from Macau to Sydney was canceled,20 passengers were stuck at Macau airport . ——22/08/08,flight from Macau to Tokyo was canceled, over 100 passengers were stuck. ——24/08/08,flight from Macau to Ho Chi Minh City was canceled,120 passengers were stuck.(http://news.carnoc.com/list/111/111503.html) ——21/08/09,flight from Macau to Sydney was canceled.(http://www.viewcn.com/xw/gaxw/2009/08/1542167.html)

If you do not worry that they can have no reason temporarily cancelling,or loss luggage without any responsibility, then you could choose this cheap flight.if everything goes well that you are really a lucky person, after that you should play casino in Macau!i consider that choose VIva Macau or play casino in fact the same. You may think why there are not many complaints of this fucking airline?i have the same question and i don't know why!i went to Macao SAR Government Consumer Council, they told us they've got over 1000 complaint cases of Viva Macau, there are over 1000 passengers haven't yet get back the refundment!they frankly said they have no power to punish Viva Macau, the best they can do is listen to you and give you commiserative eyes.in fact this fucking airline is exploiting legal loopholes and play passengers as a football, even you bought the insurance, but how troublesome how dangerous and how much they pay you back absolutely you have no idea.
★3.how do we do with Viva Macau? ◆Even we consumed only 1$,also have a right of consumers!
If you had a good experience with Viva Macau, congratulations!we are franky happy for you,at least you were not as us had to look for hotel at middle night felt so angry so frustrating and unacceptable .but if one day it happens to you ,your friend or your family?we never know that according to one's lucky experience. If you are just the victim, please don't be silent, please do your best to tell others do not take Viva Macau airline,i believe you understand how the victim's feeling.and if you are in Macau, you can directly go to their office and face to the director Sharon Chia, she is a smooth article,if she doesn't want to meet you, then just roar in their office, this is very good for their staff. there are Sharon chia's mobile:+853 66272200(Macau),+852 97339200(Hongkong),+853 8801 0171(Direct line). you also can call Macau daily(+853 28371688)or other media you have known.although Viva Macau has administration background, believe that:evil gotten, evil spent!
