Andres Escobar, born 13 March 1967, dead 2 July 1994, Colombian football player.

Andres Escobar was a defender for Colombia in the World Cup 1990 and 1994. His shirt number was 2.

2 July 1994 Escobar was gunned down outside a bar in a Medellin suburb. According to his girlfriend the killer shouted "goal" for each bullet fired.

The reason for this crime was that Escobar made an own goal in a game against United States on 22 june. The final result was 2-1 in favour of USA. Colombia did not make it to the second round because of this.

The murder was clearly a punishment for the own goal. It is not clear if the murderer acted on his own initiative or if he was sent out by any of the gamble syndicates who had bet lots of money on Colombia to win the World Cup.
