Fort Hill High School is a four-year public high school in Cumberland, Maryland, United States, operating under the direction of the Principal Stephen M. Lewis, with about 900 students in grades 9 through 12.[1]

History

About 7 acres (28,000 m2) of land on Greenway Avenue were purchased in 1936 as the site for the high school. The grounds are near protective breastworks constructed in 1861 during the Civil War. The school was constructed next to an athletic field and stadium. Students began attending in 1936.[2]

A new gymnasium was built in 1980, and the school went through extensive renovations in 1991-92. A new music wing, greenhouse and art rooms were added in 1992.[2]

Athletics

Facilities

The school gymnasium is used for league basketball.

Greenway Avenue Stadium, located at the school, was constructed in the 1930s by the Public Works Administration as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal and was built for the high school as Fort Hill Stadium. The stadium, since renamed to Greenway Avenue stadium and shared with Allegany High School, is considered to be an historic landmark. A proposed $7 million renovation project to update and expand the 70-year-old facility is in the works.[3]
