David Oreck, an American salesman and businessman, was born in Duluth, Minnesota.

At 17, Oreck joined the military. As a radar officer and navigator, he flew bombing missions in B-29s over Japan with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. After his military service, Oreck moved to New York and discovered he had a knack for sales, becoming general sales manager of RCA.

Although RCA subsidiary Whirlpool was unable to make a success of its upright vacuum cleaners, Oreck believed that with a redesign of the machine, he could give it a new lease on life. So Whirlpool gave him exclusive rights to market them throughout the United States. The company also gave Oreck free rein to redesign the machine and then produced his prototype for him under the RCA/Whirlpool label.

In 1963, he formed the Oreck Corporation in New Orleans, Louisiana, a manufacturer of commercial vacuum cleaners after a stint in Chicago, Illinois helping turn the fortunes of a local appliance distributor. At age 82, Oreck himself is spokesman for his own company on television, radio and print as his product line has expanded to the consumer market in recent years. He also remains active as a pilot, runner and motorcyclist.

David Oreck is dead.
