Dois (album)

Dois is the second album by Brazilian rock band Legião Urbana, recorded on the first quarter of 1986 and released on the EMI-Odeon label on July, 1986. Instead of a straightforward Post punk album, this release shows a wider palette of styles and influences, such as folk ("Eduardo e Mônica", largely inspired by Bob Dylan, telling the story of youngsters in Brasília which fall in love, despite having nothing in common), blues ("Música Urbana 2", a sequel of sorts for an old Aborto Elétrico song) and synthpop ("Fábrica", an environmentalist song). The result is a more accessible and memorable set of songs, which combined with the state of the economy of Brazil in 1986, made this one of the band's biggest selling records, and scored a big number of hits, such as "Quase Sem Querer", "Eduardo e Mônica", "Índios" and the anthemic "Tempo Perdido".
The influence of British rock band The Smiths is also noticed, specially in Dado Villa-Lobos' guitar work throughout the album. In certain tracks, such as "Daniel na Cova dos Leões" and "Tempo Perdido", the guitar playing style is reminiscent to Johnny Marr's, making the influence even more evidenced.
Release history
Dois was originally released in July 1986 in both 12-inch vinyl (catalogue number 31C 064 422691) and CD formats. The original 1986 CD version of the album was manufactured in relatively small quantities, since the new audio format was being slowly introduced in Brazil at the time.
In September 1995, when the CD format consolidated its position as the standard physical storage medium for audio in Brazil, the album, together with the band's entire catalogue released until then, was remastered at Abbey Road Studios in London by engineer Peter Mew[1], under the supervision of the band's members.
Reception
Since its release, Dois has been considered one of the Legião Urbana's best studio albums. In October 2007, Brazilian Rolling Stone magazine included the album at number 21 in its special issue of the "100 Greatest Brazilian Albums of All Time"[2], the highest position achieved by a Legião Urbana album among the list's entries.
