Abdul Nazer Mahdani
Abdul Nasser Madani also known as Abdul Nasser Maudani or simply Madani (born 1965, Sasthamkotta, Kerala) is a muslim political leader and an alleged Islamic terrorist from Kerala, southern India. Maudani organized an outfit known as the Islamic Sewak Sangh, which was banned in 1993 for terrorist activities.[1] Following the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992, he launched the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming it to be a "Muslim-Dalit-backward alliance". Madani is very infamous for his inflammatory speeches and religious diatribes; and has a history of police cases against him for the same, including one at Kozhikode in 1992[2]. Madani is largely viewed in a suspicious light by the non-muslims of the state; however, in some Muslim pockets in kerala; Madani is looked upon as a hero and a saviour[3].
Allegations of terror links
Maudani was arrested on 8 April 1998 in connection with 1998 Coimbatore bombings in which 60 people were killed. He has been indicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code - spreading communal hatred, criminal conspiracy, and sedition. He was released from Coimbatore prison on August 1, 2007 after being acquitted of all charges. Madani publicly denied all types of fundamentalist activities, and proclaims himself to be secular. He also says that he repents for the mistake he had committed in the past. He explains there was a radical change in the way of thinking during his imprisonment at Coimbatore jail.[4]
However, Madani himself admitted his acquaintance with Lashkar-e-Toiba's South Indian commander Thadiyantavide Naseer[5], the prime accused in 2008 Bangalore serial blasts, 2006 Kozhikode twin blasts and other cases related to recruitment of muslim youth as terrorists. But Madani denied any complicity in those crimes while talking to press-persons. Madani’s wife Sufiya Madani was charge-sheeted as the 10th accused in the Kalamassery bus arson case, which was choreographed by Thadiyantavide Naseer[6].
Assembly resolution
The Kerala assembly on March 16, 2006 passed a unanimous resolution seeking the release Abdul Nasser Maudani, on “humanitarian” grounds[7].
2009 General election
In the 2009 General elections, Madani's PDP made an alliance with the LDF, a coalition headed by CPI(M); in an effort to tap muslim votes[8]. But, the LDF suffered terribly by winning only 4 of 20 seats.
