People Telecom (ASX: PEO) is an Australian telecommunications company.
Formerly known as Swiftel Communications, People Telecom was started in 2000 by Ryan O'Hare and Colin Marland. It is one of Australia's largest telecommunication service and Internet access providers (see also Broadband Internet Access, Australia). Its services include mobile, home and business phone, broadband and dial-up Internet, telephony and some data services.
In 2005, People Telecom came first in the Deloitte Fast 50, which recognises the most dynamic and fastest-growing technology companies in Australia. People Telecom has now grown its revenues to over $100 million in five years (See ASX announcement "Full Year Accounts" dated 31/08/2006).
It was announced on July 11, 2006 that John Stanton would take over as chief executive officer effective August 7, 2006 from Ryan O'Hare. O'Hare will remain as a non-executive director of the company and will focus on strategic issues. [1]
Since 2007 People Telecom has seen its Profit and Revenue drop significantly. In an effort to save the company they slashed jobs and moved their North Sydney call centre to Manila, Philippines. The call center in now run by Sonnet.[citation needed]
On 5 December 2008 M2 Telecommunications announced it would acquire People Telecom for close to AUD$17m,[2] and on 22 December 2008 CEO John Stanton announced his resignation from People Telecom.[3]
