Palu is a city on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, located at 0°54′S 119°50′E / 0.900°S 119.833°E / -0.900; 119.833. The city sits on the mouth of Sungai Palu (Palu River), at the head of a long, narrow bay. It is the capital of the province of Central Sulawesi. Palu's population is approximately 270,000.

Events

On 23 January 2005 at 20:10 UTC, an earthquake with magnitude 6.2 Richter scale occurred in the city. The hypocenter of the earthquake was around 1.249° S, 119.922° E, some 16 km southeast of Palu at the depth of 30 km of Bora Village's hot spring, Biromaru sub-district, Donggala kabupaten. Panic ensued as most people seeked refuge in the highlands for fear of a repeat disaster like the tsunami as occurred in Aceh. The earthquake resulted in at least one casualty and 177 buildings destroyed.

On 30 December 2005, a blast in the market left eight people dead.
