the tomato is one of the family of Solanaceae or nightshade. Originating in South America, the tomato (Lycopersicum lycopersicum) is now grown world-wide for its brightly coloured (usually red) edible fruits.

Used extensively in Italian cooking, it has an acidic property that is used to bring out other flavors.
