Project Needlemouse is a code name for a platform video game in development as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is targeted for release in 2010. The game was first announced September 8, 2009.[1]
The game will be a two-dimensional side-scrolling platformer reminiscent of the original Sonic games, with an emphasis on speed. It will be playable in high definition.[2] In an interview with Digitalgames.fr, Sega France spokesperson Franck Sebastien hinted that Project Needlemouse may be targeted for the Xbox Live and PlayStation Network platforms.[3]
Marketing
At the beginning of 2010 Sega posted a "character countdown" to their blog, comprising a list of characters from the Sonic universe that could potentially be in the game and with the proviso that "not all of them are going to make the cut". Over the course of the week, fans and readers were invited to answer trivia questions, and provided enough people answered correctly, characters would be removed over time until the end of the week, when only those appearing in the final game would remain. On January 12th 2010, Sega updated their blog confirming that Charmy and Chip would not be appearing in the game. On January 13th, it was updated again removing Tikal and Vector.[4] On January 14th, it was updated a third time removing Shade and Amy Rose. The list included many lesser-known characters, as well as "Sonic's new friend Mr. Needlemouse",[4] which prompted several gaming websites to suggest that the list was an acknowledgement on the publisher's part that new characters, as well as the large cast accrued since the series's inception, was not always appreciated by long-time followers of the series, and that only Sonic would remain on the list by the end of the week.[5][6]

But with Project Needlemouse, I think that Sega wanted to settle demands, because there's a lot a nostalgic gamers out there, and on XBOX Live or PlayStation Network…you have a lot of hardcore gamers. And the old versions of Sonic games are selling very well on these platforms, so there's a real market for these kinds of products. […] The idea really is to finally please all these hardcore gamers, because we love them at Sega
