The humanitarian response to the 2010 Haitian earthquake included national governments and charitable organizations from around the world which began coordinating humanitarian aid designed to help the Haitian people. Some countries arranged to send relief and rescue workers and humanitarian supplies directly to the earthquake damage zones, while others sought to organize national fund raising to provide monetary support for the nonprofit groups working directly in Haiti. OCHA and ReliefWeb are coordinating and tracking this on a daily basis.[1]

Canada and the United States have taken leading roles in the massive humanitarian assistance. These two countries give the most financial aid to Haiti. Both have pledged more than 1000 troops to provide peacekeeping assistance, security and humanitarian aid, as well as numerous naval vessels.

Appeals for aid

Rescue supplies delivered to Haiti

Appeals for international aid have been issued, including from Raymond Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the United States and his nephew, singer Wyclef Jean,[2] also a "roving ambassador" for Haiti.[3] The American Red Cross has announced that it has run out of supplies in Haiti and has appealed for public donations.[4] British charities have launched a massive fundraising effort.[5] Ireland, which as a country has a history of helping Haitians build houses and has notable connections to Haiti through charities Concern and GOAL, telecommunications operator Denis O'Brien and broadcaster George Hook,[6][7][8] immediately switched all its charitable efforts to helping those affected by the quake.[9]

Response by national governments

Response by intergovernmental organizations

"There is no doubt that we are facing a major humanitarian emergency and that a major relief effort will be required," United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said. The U.N. mobilized an emergency response team to help coordinate humanitarian relief efforts.[10]

The EU has released €3 m in emergency funding.[15]

The EU announced US$199,000,000 in reconstruction aid.[16]

Response by non-governmental organizations

Many non-governmental organizations immediately pledged support in the aftermath of the earthquake.

International

  • World Vision International - 18 metric tonnes of emergency supplies arrived in Port-au-Prince Friday night from World Vision’s warehouse in Denver, USA, and a second flight is planned for the weekend. The first delivery includes emergency goods for more than 1,000 families, including tarps for temporary shelter; blankets, collapsible water containers, cooking sets and hygiene kits that contain a month’s supply of soap, toilet paper, toothbrushes and more for a family of five.[18]
  • File:Brac-logo.png BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee), the Bangladesh based world's largest NGO's USA wing is mobilizing resources to support the relief and rehabilitation efforts working with its two partners in Haiti.[21]

A number of Irish charities have launched appeals for aid for the victims in Haiti.[15]

  • International Committee of the Red Cross Iran's Red Crescent announced plans to send about 30 tonnes of aid including food, tents and medicine to Haiti on Jan. 14.[31]
  • Just a day following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, 220 Israelis, comprising teams of doctors and rescue and relief workers, are already on their way.IsraAid, an Israeli humanitarian organization sent a 15-person search-and-rescue team, which includes emergency medical staff and arrived in Haiti on Friday, January 15.[32]
  • ZAKA, an organization of voluntary community emergency response teams, dispatched a six person team to assist with identification, extraction and rescue of victims.[33][34]
  • A Magen David Adom delegation was dispatched on January 17 to establish field clinics in cooperation with local rescue groups and as part of a larger American Red Cross mission. Israeli volunteers will help search for the thousands thought to be buried under the rubble.[35][36]
  • Among the Israeli teams on their way to provide humanitarian aid in Haiti is a medical team of 12 from IsraAID, an early response relief group that springs into action after natural disasters, as well as some 200 others called on by Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Kenya Red Cross set up a national platform to coordinate the collection of financial, food and material donations to be shipped to Haiti.[38]

  • International Committee of the Red Cross The Malaysian Red Crescent Society has launched a fund-raising campaign for Haitian earthquake victims.[39]

The Topos de Tlatelolco volunteer search and rescue group is participating in relief efforts. This group specialized in finding victims under rubble and giving first aid. The first group of six left on 14 January for the country from Cancún. This group is called the advance team or the beachhead because their job is to make initial assessments of the situation for the teams that follow. The next group scheduled to leave is the canine unit. A total of 18 to 24 are expected to go, with transportation being provided by the Mexican navy. The group plans to be there until 28 January.[40] Also, doctors from the University of Montemorelos have departed to help as a direct response to a request from the Seventh-Day Adventist Hospital in Port au Prince.[41]

This whole project adds up to over R10 million.[47][48]

  • International Committee of the Red Cross The Turkish Red Crescent has sent two crews that include psychologists and disaster experts to make an assessment and provide urgent assistance in coordination with the Red Cross officials in the field. The Red Crescent will send further humanitarian aid teams in the light of the initial team’s report.[50] The Humanitarian Aid Foundation said that their aid was sent to Haiti from the United States by two cargo planes. The 33 tons of aid includes blankets, clothes, foodstuff, medical equipment and infant food.[citation needed]
  • The Disasters Emergency Committee, an umbrella organisation for 13 UK-registered humanitarian aid agencies, launched an appeal for relief efforts in Haiti which as of 17th January has raised £15 million (US$24.4 million) in donations.[51]
  • United Haitians in the UK (UHUK) have been collecting donations of supplies to send out and helping Haitians in the UK make contact with their relatives.[52]

In the USA, the FBI and Better Business Bureau have issued a warning about phony charities, and implored prospective donors to check the reputation of a charity before making a donation due to previous incidents of fraudulent charities.[53][54][55] On January 13, 2010, the Better Business Bureau released a list of charities requesting aid for Haiti relief efforts.[56] This list only contained charities that met the BBB's standards for "Wise Giving."

The following charities have publicly announced their intentions or actions to help Haitian victims:
