Imagine That is a 2009 comedy-drama film starring Eddie Murphy, Thomas Haden Church, Nicole Ari Parker, Martin Sheen, and Yara Shahidi. Imagine That takes place in Denver, Colorado, notable because of the skyline and landmarks. It centers on the relationship between a workaholic father Eddie Murphy, and his daughter Yara Shahidi, whose imaginary world becomes the solution to her father's success. Among the cast is veteran actor Ronny Cox who last starred with Eddie Murphy in his blockbuster series, Beverly Hills Cop.[3]

Plot

A financial executive, Evan Danielson (Eddie Murphy) can't stop his career's downspiral. However, it turns out that his young daughter, with the help of her magical blanket and her imaginary friends, is capable of predicting which stocks are good investments. Meanwhile, his scheming co-worker Johnny Whitefeather (Thomas Haden Church) tries to figure out Evan's secret to his newly found success.

Olivia (Yara Shahidi) is a girl who has divorced parents spends most time living with her mother (Nicole Ari Parker), rarely with her father. Her father, Evan (Eddie Murphy) is a workaholic father and doesn't know anything about his daughter, ignoring her, and telling her to stop talking to her "magic" blanket so called "Goo-Gaa". Evan works at a company that he has been at for 8 and a half years and has a competitor, Johnny Whitefeather (Thomas Haden Church). One day Evan has a conference, he has to bring Olivia since he cannot leave her alone at home. While Evan is getting ready, he cannot find his papers for the conference. He soon finds out that Olivia drew pictures and cut patterns on his papers and gets angry at her. Johnny steals the spotlight so Evan gets even angrier and makes up stories about the other companies relating to what Olivia did to the papers. Coincidentally, everything Evan said about the story true, and gets a raise. He asks Olivia how she knew everything and said she asked Goo-Gaa.

Johnny Whitefeather finds out the secret and feeds his son RED BULL and buys a magic blanket for $200. Johnny is at the same pace as Evan. When Evan is home, Olivia reminds him that he promised to play King Dress Up. Evan refuses and doesn't care. Soon Olivia is sent back home with her mother and very mad at her father because of his forcings to use the Goo-Gaa. Olivia had become close to her father, but now that was ruined. Evan remembers Olivia had a musical and a solo and he HAD to be there. When it is Olivia's solo part. She is dead quiet. When Evan leaves his next conference, to be the big boss of the company, (he knows he is missing out on something very large) he takes a rug, a few construction papers, scissors, paper clips, and other various tools. While Olivia is still shy for her solo, Evan bursts out of the doors dressed up as a king. Olivia sings her solo confidently just like she practiced with her father. By the end, the boss of the company lets Evan have the job after watching what he did for his daughter. Evan is very happy, gets a much better payment and lived happily ever after.

Music

The score to Imagine That was composed by Mark Mancina, who had previously worked with director Karey Kirkpatrick on Over the Hedge. He recorded his score with an 83-piece ensemble of the Hollywood Studio Symphony at the Sony Scoring Stage.[4]

Home Video release

Imagine That was released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 13, 2009. [5]

Reception

The film is a co-production between Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. Because Hotel for Dogs was released by DreamWorks instead of Paramount, Paramount reunited with Nickelodeon to co-produce the film.

The film received mixed reviews from critics. [6] Rotten Tomatoes reported that 38% of critics gave positive reviews based on 73 reviews with an average score of 5.1/10. [7] Another review aggregator, Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 top reviews from mainstream critics, the film has received an average of 53% based on 22 reviews. [6]

On its opening weekend, the film opened #6 grossing $5,503,519 in 3,008 theaters with an $1,830 average. [8] As of August 9 2009, the film has grossed $16,135,104 worldwide. [2] This opened similar to Eddie Murphy's last summer movie Meet Dave which also opened poorly its opening week.
