ISO/IEC 42010 is the ISO/IEC number for the fast track international standardization of ANSI/IEEE 1471-2000. The standard was originally balloted as ISO/IEC DIS 25961, but was subsequently adopted and published with the number ISO/IEC 42010:2007.

It is a recommended practice for the creation, analysis and maintenance of software-intensive system architectures. It defines a conceptual framework for architectural description. It includes the rational, terminology, examples and relationships to other standards.[1]

It is mentioned a number of times in the TOGAF 9 specifications.[2]

In 2006, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7/WG42 and IEEE CS launched a coordinated revision of this standard. Since then, several drafts have been produced and circulated for comment within IEEE and ISO. The revision is expected to address: harmonization with ISO/IEC 12207 and ISO/IEC 15288, alignment with other ISO architecture efforts GERAM and RM-ODP, the specification of architecture frameworks, and a mechanism for model/view correspondence rules.[3]

In February 2010, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7 started balloting on the first complete Committee Draft [4]. At the same time, IEEE is recirculating this draft for balloting as an IEEE standard.
