Lopez Tonight is a late-night television talk show hosted by comedian George Lopez. The hour-long program premiered on November 9, 2009, on cable network TBS. Lopez is the first Mexican-American to host a late-night talk show on an English-language network in the United States. The show features audience interaction using a high energy format. The program airs Monday through Thursday at 11:00pm Eastern and Pacific in the United States as well as on tln in Canada
Reception
The show has been critically panned. It scored on Metacritic a 39/100 based on 6 reviews. Matthew Gilbert of the Boston Globe claims "Lopez has a full-throated energy and a weakness for sophomoric guy humor that can be grating, especially since his show will air Monday through Thursday nights."[1] The New York Times says "Mr. Lopez said he was 'bringing change to late-night TV,' but the only significant change was a coarsening of the already crass atmosphere."[2]
Despite a few critical assertions from media outlets, the show has been a failure with viewers. Lopez Tonight has delivered outstanding growth for TBS in the 11 p.m. hour, with viewers up 34%, households up 31% and adults 18-34 and adults 18-49 both up 40% when compared to the same time period for the prior four weeks.[3] Among both adults 18-34 and 18-49, the first two weeks of Lopez Tonight out-delivered the season-to-date averages for The Colbert Report, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Last Call with Carson Daly (though all but Colbert air in later time slots than Lopez). In addition, Lopez Tonight out-delivered the season-to-date average for Late Show with David Letterman and The Wanda Sykes Show among adults 18-34.[4]
