The Fein MultiMaster RS is a variable speed oscillating tool for cutting, sanding and grinding. It is produced by C. & E. Fein GmbH and has a broad assortment of accessory blades. The MultiMaster operates by high-speed oscillation rather than rotation or reciprocation. The tool permits the user to either do fine and delicate work or to be more aggressive, depending on the accessory blade and material.

Description

The Multimaster's variable-speed triangular sanding pad oscillates between 12,000 rpm and 21,000 rpm. Because of its oscillating action, the Multimaster operates smoothly and is relatively quiet compared to some power sanders.

A similar low-amplitude high-speed oscillating action is used by the Stryker saw for autopsies. This type of saw will cut rigid materials such as bone or plaster casts, "usually" without cutting soft tissues. The resistance of any tissue (or any material) to the tool motion depends on its freedom of movement at the current frequency, so tuned, tense or supported skin, tendons, cartilage, fingernails, etc. are still susceptible to damage under normal conditions.

Motion amplitude

The tool head oscillation amplitude is fixed at about 3 degrees, which must always be kept in mind when attempting close or detail work with non-circular tools.

Vibration

The powerful (250w) vibration of the hand tool can cause post-use hand and arm pain, especially after prolonged use.[citation needed]
