Chilly Beach is a Canadian animated series, which airs on CBC Television in Canada and The Comedy Channel in Australia. The series is a comedic depiction of life in the fictional Canadian town of Chilly Beach, described by the producers as "a bunch of Canadians doing the stuff that Canadians do, like playing hockey, drinking beer, and being eaten by polar bears." Chilly Beach plays on nearly every conceivable stereotype that people have about Canadians in a satirical manner.
The show began as an animated Flash site on the Web, and was developed into a CBC TV series which first aired in 2003.
An early version of the Chilly Beach feature film, The World Is Hot Enough, made its theatrical debut at Cinéfest in September 2005. Guest stars on the show have included William Shatner, Joe Flaherty, Leslie Nielsen, Elvis Stojko, Lawrence Gowan and David Suzuki.
The show is produced in Sudbury, Ontario by March Entertainment.
As of March, 2008, three seasons of the show have been produced for a total of 65 episodes.
Characters
Main characters:
- Dale MacDonald - Is Shawn's father, he has trouble coming to terms with Shawn's cancer and refuses to believe his diagnoses, after arguing with his wife and refusing to visit Shawn at the hospital he finally cracks under the intensity and kills himself by jumping off the balcony, his head is split open. Despite his depression he was a kind, gentle character. He wore a shirt representing the american eagle and was rather fat with dirty blonde hair.
- Frank Shackleford - Dale's cousin, he thrives on becoming an ambulance driver because he feels that they help people more than actual doctors. He is short but muscular with a paper bag over his head to cover his face which he is ashamed of. He has a tense relationship with Dale and can be somewhat rude and obnoxious, he may be a sociopath due to his cold nature. He refuses to lend Dale money and knocks him out after he comments on his wife's death, he shows no empathy for Shawn when he is in the hospital. Frank's strange ambition to become and ambulance driver fails but he hits the big times when he becomes a famous Hollywood actor later in the movie, he then gets addicted to strong drugs and finally dies. At his funeral Dale claims that despite Frank's many problems he was his brother and loves him no matter what he said, he then buries Frank down by the beach where they used to play as kids and he puts Frank's records that he would always listen too at his grave.
- April June - Dale's wife she seems to be the only character who is able to come to terms with Shawn's sickness and she sticks with him through the movie and stays with him in the hospital. She is patient with Dale despite his denial, she is beautiful and tall with red curly hair. After Shawn's death and Dale's suicide she finds it hard to continue living, she figures the only way to see her son and husband again is too kill herself so she can see them in heaven, she hangs herself from the same balcony that Dale jumped off.
- Angus MacAuger - Shawn's doctor. A man suffering from Autism who lacks human empathy, he has no trouble telling people things as it is straight out in front of them not seeming to think about how they will feel, he is mostly asked by the other doctors to tell people about there fatality since he has no trouble doing so. He shows not thoughts for human emotion and tells people things as it is, Dale finally loses his patience at him and punches him out fatally. He was an average looking man who was quite tall.
- Katherine Hilderbrand - The nurse, she does not approve of Angus's methods and confront his several times, he tells her that people deserve to know the truth and not have to listen to the whole "we got bad news crap". Like Dale she loses it at Angus and rips of his hair plugs in front of all the patients, Angus is furious and humiliated and so he slips drugs into Katherine's tea which end her life, as expected he shows no empathy and just grins (even at her funeral)
- Abby - Katherine's beautiful daughter, she falls in love with Shawn and is supportive of her struggling mother, like her mom she dislikes Angus's lack of empathy and will tell her mom to confront him. After Shawn's death she kisses him and leaves the room crying. She is the only person who find out that Angus killed her mom so Angus has no choice to kill her, she uses her dead father's gun too shoot Angus's arm but he cracks her head onto the wall. He then buries her in the woods and spits on her grave.
- Constable Al - He is from the "make a wish foundation." he seems like a friendly supportive man at first and earns Katherine and Dale's trust but turns out to be a pedophile, he attempts to rape Shawn but Katherine walks in and knocks him out with a chair, she then calls the police but he picks up his gun and chases Katherine out of the room with it, he is then shot on the head by Polar Bear.
- Michel Mabuis - The greedy owner of the hospital, he supports Angus's choice to pull the plug on Shawn, he charges Katherine and obscenely large amount of money for Shawn's suffering. He is eventually thrown out from the window by Polar bear and he splats on the ground. He was obese with a balding head.
- Polar Bear - The main antagonist of the movie. He is a mental patient who goes by the name of Polar Bear. He wanders the hospital at night with a gun shooting and tormenting patients. He torments Shawn every night but Katherine won't believe Shawn when he tells her and Angus claims Shawn is simply going crazy. He strikes fear into everybody's heart. After killing Constable Al he is caught by the police who find out he killed many of the other patients, he is put on death sentence and Katherine spits on his grave. He resembles a horror movie character and is scrawny with long greasy hair and a screwed up face.
Setting
Chilly Beach is a small town located on a large iceberg, presumably in the Canadian Arctic. The iceberg is seemingly a floating island that can move around in the water. There are some trees and wildlife as well as a mountain with caves. According to at least one episode[Citation Needed], the island is located in northwestern Hudson Bay, placing it in Nunavut. However where it is set has been kept vague as it has been mentioned that they live in a province and in one episode are not actually a part of Canada.
