Gilbert, Duke of Lorraine
Gilbert of Lorraine was duke of Lotharingia until 939. Lotharingia was an area which comprised present north east France, the German Rhineland, east Belgium and the Netherlands. The beginning of the reign of Gilbert is not clear. Lotharingia belonged to West Francia or France until 922. King Charles III the Simple of West France was deposed in 922 by Robert. Charles remained king of Lotharingia and tried to reconquer West Francia from there. Gilbert deposed him in Lotharingia as well (in 925?) and sweared fealty to king Henry the Fowler of Germany, or East Francia as duke of Lotharingia. Henry was a autocratic ruler, who didn't allowed much autonomy for his dukes. Maybe that Gilbert rebelled for this reason, when Henry died in 936, and changed allegiance to the king of West Francia, where the king had no authority. Gilbert managed to be independent for three years until he was defeated and killed by the army of king Otto I of Germany in 939 at the battle of battle of Andernach.
