TownePlace Suites, a division of the Marriott International hotel chain, is an extended-stay hotel chain. The first location was officially unveiled in Newport News, Virginia on February 23, 1997. Less than ten years later, there are now 177 TownePlace Suites operating across the United States.
Marriott developed TownePlace Suites to provide an affordable place to stay for moderate-tier travelers on extended-stay trips. Rooms are designed in a casual suite-style layout with fully equipped kitchens, work and sitting areas, and one or more bedrooms. The locations more closely resemble apartment communities than they do hotels, yet still are operated by a 24-hour staff and offer housekeeping services on a twice-weekly basis. Many locations can be found along highways or near office parks. Further catering to the business traveler, TownePlace Suites offers free in-room high-speed internet access. At selected locations, exterior swimming pools and a light and healthy "AM Eats" continental breakfast are offered. Long-term-stay guests may find coin-laundry facilities available when they check in. Many TownePlace locations also have business centers, which can be found in or near the lobby area. Stocked, 24-hour convenience item displays, labeled "In A Pinch", are being rolled out chain-wide and can be found in TownePlace lobbies. These contain a selection of snack food and drinks which can be purchased at the front desk, or can be billed to the guest's folio. Single-packs of medicinal items (like for headaches and stomach ailments) can also be found here. This is similar to other Marriott select-service brands; however, the convenience areas available at those hotels are dubbed "The Market". TownePlace competes with other value-priced extended-stay chains such as Mainstay Suites and Candlewood Suites. Unlike its upscale sister brand, Residence Inn, TownePlace competes with more moderate offerings like Candlewood Suites and Extended Stay America.
As part of the Marriott family, TownePlace Suites participates in the Marriott Rewards program, allowing members staying at any TownePlace Suites location to earn points or frequent flyer miles pursuant to the terms of membership.
