A News (formerly A-Channel News) is the name of local newscasts on the A television system in Canada.
On August 11, 2008, following the relaunch of "A-Channel" as "A", A-Channel newsrooms across the country were officially rebranded as A News and now features a dynamic new on-air look. A News graphics incorporated the stylized A silver logo on a red and blue backdrop, although it has retained the former A-Channel News theme music. Unofficially, the stations' employees had begun to refer to the newscasts as A News several weeks before the official name change took place.
A News programming is produced in markets which are not directly served by a local CTV News service. The system's cable-only A Atlantic service in Atlantic Canada does not produce its own A News programming, but instead airs newscasts from the CTV Atlantic system, although the station does produce a local morning show, Breakfast Television. The A station in Ottawa no longer airs any A News programming, although it continues to produce a local morning show, A Morning.
Barrie
A News on CKVR-TV in Barrie is anchored by Lance Chilton and Jayne Pritchard weekdays at 6 and 11 p.m., and anchored by Chris Lesage on weekends.
A News This Week, a newscast that generally focused on the week's top local news stories formerly aired Saturday nights at 11 p.m. Ontario News This Week, a newscast that generally focused on the week's top provincial-related news stories also formerly aired Sunday nights at 11 p.m.
Both A News This Week and Ontario News This Week were cancelled along with the A Morning shows produced in Barrie, London and Vancouver Island in early March 2009.
Ottawa
A News on CHRO-TV in Ottawa was anchored by Sandra Blaikie weekdays at 6, Tony Grace weeknights at 11 and Annette Goerner on weekends. A spinoff version of A News called A News This Week aired Sunday nights at 6:30 p.m. and recapped the week's news.
These newscasts were cancelled on March 3, 2009, as a result of what CTV calls severe financial issues with the A stations, although the Ottawa station continues to broadcast A Morning.[1] CHRO was the only A station (unlike the A station in Wingham which was scheduled to shut down entirely) to have its evening newscasts cancelled; the stations in Barrie, London and Victoria kept their evening newscasts but instead lost their morning shows. The likely reason for this is that, unlike the other A markets, there is also a CTV network station in Ottawa, CJOH-TV also owned by CTVglobemedia, which has dominated the local evening news ratings for years.
London/Windsor
A News on CFPL-TV in London is anchored by Dan MacLellan weekdays at 6, and Tara Overholt at 11. There is a weekend half-hour edition of the program, anchored by Derek Rogers. CHWI-TV in Windsor has a separate weekday newscast anchored by Jim Crichton, but simulcasts the London edition on weekends. A spinoff version of A News called A News This Week airs Sunday nights at 6:30 p.m. and recaps the week's top stories.
Until 2009, CKNX-TV in Wingham aired a simulcast of almost all of CFPL London's newscasts with the exception of the 11 p.m. weeknight newscast in which CKNX aired a separate news feed which was also produced at the CFPL London studios. Due to the 2009 economic crisis, CTV closed down CKNX Wingham as of August 31, 2009, in which the station's transmitter was converted to a rebroadcaster of CFPL London, viewers in that area continue to receive newscasts from CFPL London, although CKNX no longer airs a separate 11 p.m. weeknight news feed as a result.
Vancouver Island
A News on CIVI-TV in Vancouver Island is anchored by Hudson Mack at 5 and 6 p.m., and Cheryl Bloxham at 11 p.m. A spinoff version of A News airs at 6:30pm weeknights, called Vancouver Island Report, a newscast generally focused on news on Vancouver Island.
There is currently a weekend half-hour edition of A News at Six, anchored by Andrew Johnson. There is also a spinoff version of A News which airs Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday mornings at 8:30am called Island Weekend, a half-hour recap on the news and events happening around Vancouver Island during the week.
