Syed Ziaur Rahman is a medical scientist of repute working in the field of Pharmacology. Many scholars and institutions have cited his research works in both medical science and general science. He belongs to a much-respected family of Indian Unani Physicians. He is a son of Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman.

Contribution in the Medical Science
- Introduced the concept of Environmental Pharmacology and coined a new term Pharmacoenvironmentology. He also differentiated and defined the two upcoming branches in Environmental Pharmacology.[1][2][3]
Pharmacoenvironmentology
A branch of environmental pharmacology and a form of pharmacovigilance which deals entry of chemicals or drugs into the environment after elimination from humans and animals post-therapy. It deals specifically with those pharmacological agents that have impact on the environment via elimination through living organisms subsequent to pharmacotherapy
Ecopharmacology
A branch of environmental pharmacology which is concerned with the entry of chemicals or drugs into the environment through any route and at any concentration disturbing the balance of ecology (ecosystem), as a consequence. Ecopharmacology is a broad term that includes studies of “PPCPs” irrespective of doses and route of entry into environment.
- On the recommendation of Medical Council of India (MCI), and after getting survey related to the attitude of undergraduate medical students towards Alternatives to animal testing and Animal experiments, he initiated a separate lab on “Alternatives to Animal Experimentation” in the Department of Pharmacology at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. This is the first attempt in India. In addition, he edited "A guide to alternatives to animal experiment in pharmacology", which is included in the curriculum of second professional MBBS course.[4]
- He started as editor-in-chief, the official journal of Society of Pharmacovigilance, India - "Journal of Pharmacovigilance & Drug Safety (ISSN 0972–8899)"
Social Services
He is the founder trustee and treasurer of Ibn Sina Academy of Medieval Medicine & Sciences, Aligarh. He coordinated in the establishment of its Library, Museums, Centre for Safety & Rational Use of Indian Systems of Medicine & AIDS Cell.
