The Spice and Wolf animated television series is based on the light novel series Spice and Wolf, written by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Jū Ayakura. The episodes are directed by Takeo Takahashi and animated and produced by Imagin.[1] The story follows a 25-year-old traveling merchant named Kraft Lawrence, who one night meets a wolf-deity named Holo who controls wheat harvest. Holo was bound to a nearby town by an old promise to ensure good harvest, but they had stopped believing in her. Lawrence helps her escape this town and, in return, she helps him with his business transactions as they head north toward Holo's homeland of Yoitsu.

The anime first aired between January 9 and March 26, 2008 on the Chiba TV Japanese television network,[2] and the episodes were released to six DVD compilation volumes, each of which contained two episodes except for the first compilation, which contained three episodes.[3] The volumes were released between April 2 and August 29, 2008 by Pony Canyon.[4][5] The third volume, released on May 30, 2008, contained episode six of the television broadcast in addition to the unaired episode seven, which is included as an original video animation.[3][6] The anime is licensed for release in English by Kadokawa Pictures USA and Funimation Entertainment,[7][8] and a complete thirteen-episode Region 1 DVD box set was released on December 22, 2009.

Two pieces of theme music are used for the episodes; one opening theme and one ending theme. The opening theme is "Tabi no Tochū" (旅の途中) by Natsumi Kiyoura, and the ending theme is "Ringo Hiyori: The Wolf Whistling Song" (リンゴ日和 〜The Wolf Whistling Song) by Rocky Chack.[1]

A second season of the anime titled Spice and Wolf II began airing on July 9, 2009. Most of the staff from the first season returned, though Toshimitsu Kobayashi replaced Kazuya Kuroda as the character designer and chief animation director and Brain's Base managed the animation instead of Imagin. The voice actors from the first season retained their roles.[9]
