Community discussion

A community discussion (found here) has placed Climate change and related pages on article probation - effective as of 23:30, 1 January 2010 (UTC). Please direct all discussions of this remedy to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents.

Remedy

Pages related to Climate change (broadly construed) are subject to the following terms of article probation:

  • Any editor may be sanctioned by an uninvolved administrator for disruptive edits, including, but not limited to, edit warring, personal attacks, incivility and assumptions of bad faith.
    • Sanctions imposed may include restrictions on reverts or other specified behaviors, bans from editing the climate change pages and/or closely related topics, blocks of up to 1 year in length, or any other measures the imposing administrator believes are reasonably necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the project.
    • For the purpose of imposing sanctions under this provision, an administrator will be considered "uninvolved" if he or she is not engaged in a current, direct, personal conflict on the topic with the user receiving sanctions (note: enforcing this provision will not be considered to be participation in a dispute).
  • Prior to any sanctions being imposed, the editor in question shall be given a warning with a link to these provisions; and, where appropriate, should be counseled on specific steps that he or she can take to improve his or her editing in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Sanctions imposed under this provision may be appealed to the imposing administrator, the appropriate administrators' noticeboard (template), or the Arbitration Committee.
  • Administrators are not to reverse such sanctions without either (1) approval by the imposing administrator, or without (2) community consensus or Committee approval to do so.
  • All sanctions imposed are to be logged at Wikipedia:General sanctions/Climate change probation/Log.

Extension to the general probationary arrangements for climate change articles

  • Comments made in discussion which appear, in the opinion of an uninvolved administrator or other uninvolved user in good standing, to violate the talk page guidelines, should be brought to the attention of the user making the comment with a polite note to the effect that refactoring or removal would be appreciated.
  • If the user refuses, or does not respond within a reasonable time, an uninvolved administrator or other uninvolved user may tag the comments using {{Inappropriate comment}} or some other generally acceptable means, following a request to the Probation Enforcement page. Such requests may only be responded to by editor who made the alleged violation, and may be actioned by any uninvolved admin or editor in good standing without further consultation. Any request unactioned after 24 hours will be archived.
  • Deliberate reinsertion of refactored comments, by any party, will be regarded as disruption and may be sanctioned appropriately.
  • Brief requests to review potentially inappropriate comments may be posted here. Debate regarding the degree of inappropriateness, results of review by uninvolved individuals or responses to those individuals on their talk pages, is strongly discouraged.
  • This is not designed to deal with repeated or egregious violations.

How to avoid being subject to remedies

  • Do not edit-war;
  • Interact civilly with other editors;
  • Avoid making repeated comments unrelated to bettering the article;
  • Avoid repeatedly discussing other editors, discuss the article instead;
  • Not much leeway in pages under probation, so basically be a model Wikipedian;
  • We actually know when we cross the line; we are all intelligent people;
  • Don't get worked up when you get subjected to remedies such as a temporary block or ban. Take a break and come back refreshed.

Notification of probation

Articles within the scope of this probation may be tagged on their talk pages with Template:Community article probation filled out as follows:

{{Community article probation|main page=Climate change|[[Wikipedia:General sanctions/Climate change probation]] for full information and to review the decision}}

This template will automatically categorise articles into Category:Articles on probation. Note that the "Main page" field should be left as shown above, since the main page for this set of articles under probation is Climate change. For a list of pages that are currently tagged, see here.

To notify a user on their talk page that an article is under probation, Template:uw-probation can be used. This can be referenced with:

{{subst:uw-probation|PAGE NAME|Wikipedia:General sanctions/Climate change probation}}

where PAGE NAME needs to be changed to the name of the relevant article.

Please record notifications in the appropriate table at Wikipedia:General sanctions/Climate change probation/Log#Notifications.
