A number of smaller nations had autonomy within the main Soviet republics and were called Autonomous Oblasts, or AO.
Within the Russian SFSR
- Adygey AO (now Adygeya)
- Cherkess AO (Cherkessia) (Cherkess National District 1926-1928; Cherkess AO 1928-1957)
- Jewish AO
- Gorno-Altai AO (now Altai Republic)
- Karachay-Cherkess AO (now Karachay-Cherkessia)
- Khakass AO (now Khakassia)
- Tuvan AO (1944-1961) (now Tuva)
