Autonomous oblasts of the Soviet Union

A number of smaller nations had autonomy within the main Soviet republics and were called Autonomous Oblasts, or AO.

Within the Russian SFSR

Adygey AO (now Adygeya)
Cherkess AO (Cherkessia) (Cherkess National District 1926-1928; Cherkess AO 1928-1957)
Jewish AO
Gorno-Altai AO (now Altai Republic)
Karachay-Cherkess AO (now Karachay-Cherkessia)
Khakass AO (now Khakassia)
Tuvan AO (1944-1961) (now Tuva)

Within the Georgian SSR

South Ossetian AO (now South Ossetia)

Within the Azerbaijan SSR

Nagorno-Karabakh AO (see Nagorny Karabakh)

Within the Tajik SSR

Gorno-Badakhshan AO (see Badakhshan)

Within the Byelorussian SSR

Dzierzynszczyzna(1932--1935), Polish autonomous district
