The Reserve team is what many european football clubs have as a backup behind their regular first team, their main purpose is to give young talented players a chance to prove themselves without risking them in more high profile matches with the main squad. The reserves are almost always of a lower standard than the first team.

In most cases, Like the first team, the reserves also play in a league competition and often in cup competition too. They are above the youth team in any one clubs' system.
