Amelia County is a county located in the U.S. State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 11,400.
Geography
The county has a total area of 929 km2 (359 mi2). 924 km2 (357 mi2) of it is land and 5 km2 (2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.
Demographics
As of 2000, there are 11,400 people, 4,240 households, and 3,175 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km2 (32/mi2). There are 4,609 housing units at an average density of 5 persons/km2 (13 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 70.57% White, 28.05% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,240 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 25.10% are non-families. 20.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the county, the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $40,252, and the median income for a family is $47,157. Males have a median income of $32,315 versus $23,102 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,858. 8.40% of the population and 6.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 7.10% are under the age of 18 and 11.70% are 65 or older.
