2NE1

2NE1 (Template:Lang-ko; pronounced "To Anyone"[1] or "twenty-one"[2]) is a South Korean girl group created by YG Entertainment. First appearing in a Cyon commercial campaign with Big Bang for LG Telecom, their debut single "Fire" was released on May 6, 2009. On May 17, 2009 the group debut with their first single "Fire" on SBS's Inkigayo.

The group's name 2NE1 stands for 'New Evolution of the 21st Century'[3].

History

The group was first mentioned by the press in late 2008, when rumors were spreading that YG was creating a female version of Big Bang named "Sista". YG Entertainment announced that the group would consist of four members and debut sometime in May 2009.[4] The company stated that the group had trained for 4 years, and that their debut album would contain songs produced by 1TYM Leader Teddy Park.[5][6][4] The group's name was initially announced as "21"; however, due to the discovery of a singer with the same name, the group was quickly renamed "2NE1".[7]

2009: Debut, rise to fame

2NE1's first song was "Lollipop", digitally released on March 27, 2009.[4] The song was created for LG to promote their Cyon phone, and it was a joint release with Big Bang; the commercial/music video debuted on March 28, 2009.[8] Although it was not a promoted single (as it was an advertisement song, there were problems with network chart eligibility[9]), "Lollipop" proved to be a strong chart hit, going to #1 on various online charts[9] and topping music television network M.Net's online chart for four weeks in a row.[10]

On April 30, Yang Hyun-suk revealed that 2NE1's debut song would be a hip-hop/reggae song, and that it would be digitally released on May 6, 2009.[11] Titled "Fire", the song was fully written and produced by 1TYM's Teddy Park.[12] Teasers of the song were released on their official website at the beginning of May, with a 20-second clip released on May 1.[13]

"Fire" was released as planned on May 6, with two versions of the music video — a "space" version and a "street" version — released the same day.[14] The videos received over one million views in a day.[15] The group's first performance of the song was on May 17, 2009, on SBS's Inkigayo,[16] beginning the group's activities.

Both the song and the group became popular online, with the song topping M.Net's online chart and the group's name becoming a top search term.[17] The group was also rewarded with three Cyworld Digital Music Awards, with both "Lollipop" and "Fire" winning "Song of the Month" awards and the group winning "Rookie of the Month" for May 2009.[18] They received their first Mutizen award during their fourth stage performance in SBS Inkigayo (Popular Song) on June 14, 2009. They received their second Mutizen award on SBS Inkigayo on June 21, 2009. Along with their awards successes, 2NE1 signed a deal with Fila to become the new models for their commercial campaign 2 days after 2NE1's Mutizen win.[19]

"I Don't Care" was released as the second single on July 1, 2009,[20] with promotions starting in early July.[21] YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk stated at the time that the song would demonstrate a softer, more feminine image.[20]

An unplugged "reggae" version of the song was performed on SBS's Inki Gayo music show, signaling the end of promotions for the song.[22] However, due to the remix's popularity, it was released to digital outlets on September 3, 2009.[22]

Along with three other groups (Big Bang, Girls Generation & Super Junior) representing Korea, 2NE1 performed in the 6th Asia Song Festival in September 2009, where they received the 2009's "Asian Newcomer's Award." [23] In September, the group briefly promoted "Pretty Boy", "In the Club", and "Let's Go Party" on various Korean music shows before ending promotions for their album.[citation needed] After ending their promotions, each member began releasing their own solo singles. Dara was the first member to release a single; "Kiss" featuring fellow member CL, was used in a Cass commercial. Bom then released "You and I", which was promoted in the fall of 2009. CL and Minzy then released "Please Don't Go" after Bom finished promoting her single. All three solo singles hit #1 on various online charts.

2010: Return to group activities

On February 9, 2010, "Nal Ddarahaebwayo" (Template:Lang-ko, "Try to Follow Me") was released to digital outlets, without prior notice and being used as a theme song for Samsung Corby Folder.[24] The song went straight to number 1 only a few hours after its release.[citation needed] The song is also up all-kill on music charts in just 3 days.[citation needed] On February 17, 2010 YG confirmed a Music Video being in production for the named song. Citing that, “We decided to film a music video for 2NE1’s Try to Copy Me. Although we initially had no plans for a music video, we eventually decided to due to the hot response,” a representative said. “Seo Hyun Seung […] will direct the music video […] which will have a chic and trendy concept.”[This quote needs a citation] The full music video was officially released on March 11, 2010.

To celebrate their special 200th episode, MBC patched things up with YG Entertainment and got 2NE1 to appear for the first time ever on Music Core. The girls performed their debut song Fire and their follow up hit I Don’t Care.

On March 1, 2010, 2NE1 is the biggest winner at at Cyworld Digital Music Awards 2009 bagging four prestigious awards including the plum for being the biggest selling artist for 2009. Besides bagging the "top seller award," the group also won the Best Rookie Group, Best Song for “I Don’t Care” and Best Artist awards. They were mentioned in one of Jinu Kim's documentary about Girl Power. They are currently preparing for their comeback to be scheduled this May.[25]
