Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) was founded in 1962, and inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru. At the time it was only the fourth Engineering Institute in the Bombay region after VJTI, UDCT and IIT Bombay. It is located in Munshi Nagar, Andheri (West), Mumbai.
The College is an educational institute offering courses in the field of engineering, financially aided by the state government of Maharashtra. Until 1994, three disciplines of engineering were offered: civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Electronics and computer science were introduced in 1995, but as a privately funded effort, as Government funding was not forthcoming. Information technology was introduced in 1998.
The University of Bombay continued to recognise the college as two separate institutions — Aided and Unaided. In 2005, the Unaided institution was separated from the parent college and renamed the Sardar Patel Institute of Technology(SPIT). SPIT now has its own facilities, which are independent of those of SPCE.
The college hosts the annual SPACE inter-collegiate festival in January or February. An intra-college festival Techno-Break is held in the latter part of the year. The annual magazine published by students every year is titled Disha. SPCE shares campus space with Bhavan's College, the SP Jain Institute of Management, the Hansraj Morarji High School and Wadia High School. The campus has a botanical garden, a temple, a picturesque lake and a student's hostel. Since 2005 the Bhavan's Campus has boasted two separate engineering colleges in the same campus.
The parent body, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan was among the first educational trusts to have recognised this need, and has furthered the interests of aspiring engineering students and also met the needs of the challenging world of business. Over the last forty years the college has gained an excellent reputation in the field of Technical Education. SPCE is one of the few colleges that has received grade "A+" rating for its aided courses and an "A" grade for the un-aided courses from the Government of Maharashtra.
Sardar Patel College of Engineering is one of the top five engineering institutes of the state, stands apart as a symbol of quality in engineering education. This has been possible because of the dedication of its competent faculty, committed students, its mission to influence the quality of engineering education in industry and the ability to bridge the gap between an academic institution and a challenging business world.
SPCE students have maintained a proud tradition of excellent academic records by securing high ranks, gold medals and other awards in the University examinations.
This is the first college(affiliated to Mumbai University) to start part-time degree and postgraduate courses. The college has produced more than 7,000 graduate and around 100 postgraduate engineers. Many of their past students are now leaders in their professions, and today SPCE alumni can be found in all public and private sector organisations operating in diverse fields, often holding senior and key positions.
