Leila Steinberg (December 18, 1961) is an American educator, writer, dancer, singer and founder of Alternative Intervention Models (formerly Assemblies In Motion), a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to helping at-risk youth find their voice using the arts and athletics. She is best know as the artist mentor and first manager for superstar rapper, Tupac Shakur who came to her writing workshop, The Microphone Sessions in the Oakland Bay area.
Biography
Early life
Leila Steinberg was born in Los Angeles, California as the middle child to a free-spirit Mexican-Turkish American mother and a Polish Jewish-American criminal defense attorney.
Career
During the late 1980's Steinberg was a backup dancer and singer touring with world music icons, O.J Ekemode & The Nigerian Allstars. She also shared the stage with Santana, The Spinners, Bo Diddley, The Neville Brothers, Burning Spear and Jimmy Cliff. As a verteran music industry executieve she served as a street marketer with Atlantic Records, Sony, Def Jam, Tommy Boy, Interscope, and Relativity.
Life with Tupac Shakur
While living in the Oakland Bay area, Leila came to know of a promising by shy young 17 year old named Tupac Amaru Shakur. After a fateful meeting, she opened her home where he read and wrote under her encouragement.
Alternative Intervention Models (A.I.M.)
Leila Steinberg founded Alternative Intervention Models (AIM) in 1997. AIM is a Los Angeles based non-profit that has arts programs and athletic programs for at-risk youth. Karina Smirnoff heads the Dance Intervention division and Ahmad Clayton heads the Athletic Intervention division.
The Microphone Sessions
The Microphone Sessions (TMS) is a writing workshop started by Leila Steinberg that develops and facilitates spoken word, poetry, hip-hop, singing and dramatic performances. Weekly gatherings are held all around the world that are guided by Steinberg trained artist-educators.
