American singer-songwriter Katy Perry's untitled second studio album will be released during the summer of 2010.
Album Information
In May 2009, Perry talked to Rolling Stone about the album: "The second record is really important to me because I think it shows whether I’m meant to do this, or I got lucky. Basically what I want to do is not alienate the audience that I have at all. I think some people feel like they have had success with one thing and one idea and one record and they want to pull a 180 and try a totally different thing, I definitely feel like that’s the wrong move. I feel like you just have to grow from it, you can branch off of it but keep the tree the same in some ways. Some people get full of themselves, and they think that anything they do is going to work or turn to gold or be the right move, and the reason why you’re here is because of the people that like your music and the fans, so you always should keep an ear open to what they’re saying". Perry said she’ll “definitely keep it pop. ‘Love Fool’ by the Cardigans meets ‘Into the Groove’ by Madonna but a little more meat on the bones lyrically, I’m not just gonna talk about the beat and just dancing, I like to get into the meaning”. Perry didn't reveal much about what the songs will be about, but did say they’d focus on the whirlwind last year of her life, to dealing with fame to friendships to her “relationships".[4]
Perry started recording the album on October 13, 2009, she stated that she has "lots of layers to get through, thankfully Greg Wells is there to do the peeling".[5] It has been announced that she is working with numerous artists and producers including Greg Wells,[6] Guy Sigsworth,[6] Dr. Luke,[6] Max Martin,[7][6] Ryan Tedder,[8] Rivers Cuomo,[9] Thaddis "Kuk" Harrell,[10] Greg Kurstin, Benny Blanco, Cathy Dennis, Ester Dean, The-Dream and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, who told Rap-Up magazine in December 2009 that the sound of the album will be pop/rock, the same sound as One of the Boys. He added: "It’s a different gear for me. This is a very important project for me ’cause people are waiting to see what I’m gonna do".[11]
Perry said that she wanted to work with electronic artist Calvin Harris on the album, "but he got really famous so it didn't happen".[12]
On March 27, 2010, at 2010 Kids' Choice Awards, Perry told MTV News that the album is "coming out this summer. It's a summer record". She added that her previous teases about the album still fit. "It's what I said I wanted earlier," she told MTV. "We nailed it: It's roller-skating! It's '90s! It's Ace Of Base! It's Cyndi Lauper! It's like all these colors and more". She also said that there "might be some really cool guest appearances by some cool rappers from the West Coast. I mean, you'll just have to see, since I'm a California girl, you know. And then some best friends might be appearing. ... We'll see!. It's going to be fun. It's going to be one of those records that is everybody's favorite guilty pleasure".[13]
In March 2010, Perry's official website and MySpace profile were updated with the message that her new album would be released in the summer of 2010.[14] Katy Perry asked British group Gorillaz to feature on the album, but they declined.[15]
In April 2010, Ryan Tedder said that he penned three tracks for the album but due to his own band's success and busy schedule, he didn't get the chance to go in the studio with Perry yet, he stated:"She and I have actually been trading text messages for, like, the last five months about this album, trying to lock our schedules in. I have three songs that I think are dead-on, incredible songs for her that are just started, they're ideas that I want to finish with her. So, literally, in the next three days, I travel with a microphone and studio stuff, so I'm going to be trading emails with her and hopefully get one of them on the album at the last minute. I'm literally the last guy to come on board, and I was one of the first people she talked to [about working on the album]. That's what happens when you're in a band. The stuff that I'm doing for Katy Perry... it connects to the first album, One song is, like, the evolution of 'Hot N Cold,' that kind of thing. The next step from that. The other two literally sound like something you would hear in the mid-'90s at a roller-rink skating party - like, a birthday party at a skating rink. I would describe it as guilty-pleasure music, straight up. I've had the melodies and the choruses in these songs stuck in my head for, like, a week. So I feel really good about it, and Katy, I hope you like it".[16]
Perry said that the album is inspired by ABBA and The Cardigans. Perry said that before recording the album, she gave her producer Dr Luke a mixtape of songs by the two groups in order to demonstrate how she wanted her next record to sound. Perry described the album as "more groove-driven". She added, "When I went on tour, as much as I love all the in-between songs, I felt I was missing some of the stuff that made people bounce up and down. I really love that feeling when people are all jumping in unison, we worked in Santa Barbara, we worked in Los Angeles. I was telling everybody I had a lot of jewels, but I didn't have the crown, and then I finally got the crown so all the jewels made sense. And now I have this thing, this crown that I'm ready to present".[17]
On April 26, 2010, Darkchild stated that he is in the studio with Perry.[18]
During a Rolling Stone photo shoot in April 2010, Perry revealed details about a song on the album, called "California Gurls", allegedly a response to Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind", she stated: "It’s so great that 'Empire State of Mind' is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the f**k? What about LA? What about California?. It's been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl's perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the '90s, almost house music references".[19] The song features California rapper Snoop Dogg.[1] USA Today gave the song a positive review: "Potential single California Gurls, with Snoop Dogg, is an effervescent toast to summer fun".[1] Perry also spoke about working with producers Max Martin and Dr Luke: "Working with Max Martin and Dr Luke was a wonderful collaborative effort, I worked with them on the first record ['One of the Boys'], and of course I wanted to come back and work with them even more on this record, so instead of it being two songs we have six or seven on this record now".[19]
On April 27, 2010 Perry posted a message on twitter stating that she was shooting the cover for the album's first single and stating that "There couldn't be more color".[20] She subsequently posted a photo from the shoot that showed only her pink and black polka-inspired finger nails.[21][22] On April 28, 2010 Perry stated that she filmed the music video for the first single.[23] On April 30, 2010 Perry stated on twitter that it's the last day of recording the album and thanked Greg Wells, one of the producers.[24]. On May 5, 2010, Perry shot the album cover.[25]
