DYK for Jocko Thompson

Updated DYK query On April 2, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Jocko Thompson, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Hey, just checking to see if you'll be able to finish the GA review. If not that's fine, just let me know. Since there's a GA drive going it'll be picked up quickly. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 19:48, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I will, I've just been swamped because of Holy Week. I didn't see any response from the nominator on my opening comments either, so I wasn't sure what had been looked at. I should have some time the next few evenings. KV5 (TalkPhils) 19:49, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, just checking. Looks like Secret disappeared again, so I can try and work on the article on his behalf. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 19:56, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK, sounds like a plan. Look forward to working with you. KV5 (TalkPhils) 19:58, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is a very busy weekend for me too, so no telling if I'll be able to finish it up. I'll try to get another group done, but I can't do a lot at once. Tonight is the only free time I have, and I'm trying to catch a game for the first time all season. KV5 (TalkPhils) 23:26, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I did the DYK for that article... I'd guess it's probably not working out at the moment for you guys. He wasn't ready to be an everyday major league player yet. He got rushed up. It's not like Francisco is getting any playing time, which is a real shame because Werth is the only Phillies outfielder doing anything to speak of so far this season. As to Krichell, I'll be home this evening to do some more reviewing. My schedule has been ridiculously full. Sorry about the delay. KV5 (TalkPhils) 11:41, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Aside from the POV part, the editor made at least one glaring error, as the 2001 D-Backs also won all 4 of their home games in that World Series, while losing the 3 in New York. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:57, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They never pay attention, do they? KV5 (TalkPhils) 11:58, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What does that mean, "they never pay attention"? Yes, it was an error, as I should have said the first two times, instead of the only two times, but it was and is a big deal, regardless of the error. Anyway. So who are the "they" to which I apparently belong, and to what is it that I am not paying attention? 98.71.245.241 (talk) 14:07, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

From my talk page

Asking me to "be more careful" was truly unnecessary in this edit summary. I didn't have a problem with just one of your edits; I had an issue with all of them because they were mostly unreferenced, and the breaking-up of the paragraph wasn't really necessary. KV5 (TalkPhils) 11:56, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well fine then, but you should know I'm a poor mind reader. I could only tell about the POV objection because that's all you mentioned, and, as I said, it was a good point on your part. And I think the issue is corrected now, thanks to your observation. 98.71.245.241 (talk) 13:59, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More Twins

"Original research" doesn't quite do justice to that amusing, gushy little paragraph. "Crystal ball gazing" and "Pure hype" are more like it. They are now 4-1 on the new season. Get the champagne ready! :) I hear champagne goes well with walleye-on-a-stick. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots15:00, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You gotta do what you gotta do... KV5 (TalkPhils) 15:47, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I betcha the Phillies don't serve walleye-on-a-stick. Even now I can hear you drooling with envy. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:01, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Salivating... really... KV5 (TalkPhils) 16:02, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
At 11 dollars a stick, they should include a tag indicating what percentage of that 11 dollars is going toward Joe Mauer's salary. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:39, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say about $9.89 plus tax. KV5 (TalkPhils) 16:52, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, probably 9.89 to help pay for Mauer and 1.11 to help pay for the stadium. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots18:25, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, at least so far, the Twins are not floundering. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots17:07, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the Mauer contract was quite a catch. KV5 (TalkPhils) 18:06, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Roy Halladay

Hi there. Why I added this photo to the article is because you disregard the files uploaded to the Commons. You've uploaded many files to the English language Wikipedia so far, and I've moved those to the Commons. If you upload this photo to the English language Wikipedia, it will be a waste of time and effort. So I added it to let you know that you don't need upload this file to the English language Wikipedia. On this occation, I say that you should upload files to the Commons.

Incidentally, I request you to delete File:BrandonWebb.jpg. I had uploaded File:Brandon Webb bunting.jpg to the Commons on October 28, 2009, already. But 4 months later, you uploaded equal file to English language Wikipedia. You should take responsibility because you uploaded the duplicate image and are an administrator. Thanks. --UCinternational (talk) 03:24, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The rationale you just provided for replacing a superior image with a decidedly inferior one (because I upload images here rather than to Commons) is a poor one at best. My uploading of images here rather than at Commons has nothing to do with the quality of images available. Users are not required to upload at Commons, and since I only rarely visit Commons, I do my uploading here.
On another note, I would appreciate it if you scaled back your accusatory tone ("I say that you should upload files to the Commons"; "You should take responsibility because you uploaded the duplicate image") and belittling of others' work ("it will be a waste of time and effort"). Everyone has different ways of operating, and one way is not better than the other, so please respect the work of other users.
As to the Brandon Webb image, I can't delete it without discussion, as it's not a bit-for-bit copy (I happen to prefer the uncropped version, which is why I uploaded it to begin with). KV5 (TalkPhils) 11:47, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Not yet, but keep an eye out should be up by later tonight. Very cool on Jocko, are you going for an eventual giant Whiz Kids topic like "The Incredibles" or whatever it was one with cricket recently promoted? And also sorry again about being so slow with the next Triple Crown (MLB, not Alexander the Great... :) ) list. The data entry crushes my soul after a while, so I've taken a quick detour into these DYKs and GAs. Staxringold talkcontribs 23:52, 12 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They do seem to be kind of a cream or off-white this year,[1] maybe because the pure white would practically glare in the sun. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots12:49, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Still, it's not official. KV5 (TalkPhils) 12:55, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unable to find an "official" list of various team's colors on MLB.COM. In any case, I wouldn't even characterize the uniforms as cream, but more like an off-white. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:12, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
An editor introduced some new team colors on March 29, including the "cream" home team variation. I don't know what that editor's source is:File:ALC-Uniform-MIN.PNGBaseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:15, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is an alternate uniform; those were introduced over the offseason. I did see them. Same applies with the Phillies, though; their alternate is off-white or cream, but it's not a team color. Just a variant on an old uni. KV5 (TalkPhils) 16:17, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Any idea where there's an "official" source for colors? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:32, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I usually consider SSUR to be authoritative as a secondary source, as they're dedicated to the very purpose of defining a team's colors, and that page does a good job of breaking it down by what's a uniform color, what's temporary, what's commemorative, what's a logo color only, etc. As to a primary source from MLB, that likely doesn't exist, but the shop claims to sell products in the "official team colors". KV5 (TalkPhils) 16:37, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably the best we can do, then, short of placing a phone call to the team itself. Alternative uniforms are often not necessarily the team's colors, and road uniforms typically include a predominant gray or similar color that's certainly not a team color. It's possible the sort-of-cream color uniform was adopted as an occasional "throwback" reference to the 1960s. They wore that on opening day, and wore solid blue shirts the next day. Things used to be much simpler: one set for home, one for road. That was before the marketers took over. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:45, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Even coming from someone who works in marketing, I agree wholeheartedly. KV5 (TalkPhils) 16:51, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hard telling who to blame this phenomenon on, although a reasonable candidate would be Charlie Finley in the late 60s, when he started making a big deal about uniform variants. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots17:16, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Today it's bright and sunny at Target Field, and the Twins again are wearing those off-white or cream-color uniforms. I've got a hunch we're going to be seeing those more often than just an "alternate". It will be interesting to watch and see. But I think they're wearing them during day games simply because their pure white that they've worn in the Dome would be too bright for TV on days like this. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:25, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Game just ended, with another Twins win, and if they keep playing this well they will probably end up on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which should bust their balloon. If these cream-colored uniforms become a regular thing, I would expect to see them starting to turn up in the team catalog at some point. Although it's also possible that the club actually considers them to be "white". We'll see, as the season progresses. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:54, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And on an equally bright and sunny day on Sunday, the Twins wore their standard pure white. So there's no figuring it. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:56, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fun fact (which may end up being the DYK hook)

This is funny, as it merges 2 things I'm working on. Matt Holliday won the 2007 RBI title over Ryan Howard by 1 thanks to his play in the 2007 National League Wild Card tie-breaker game. Had Howard won in that season then his shared title in 2009 would have been a record-breaking fourth consecutive season in which he led the league in RBI, a record held by quite a few notable players. Staxringold talkcontribs 20:44, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think that would be a great hook (and the Phillies still got to the playoffs!). KV5 (TalkPhils) 01:39, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Zomg, haxxor. Also damn, you're on list #3 and I'm only halfway through #2!! Staxringold talkcontribs 18:24, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oh, I'm still gonna do 99% baseball, I just meant for an outside-baseball article. Still have the draft pick lists (which I'm using for the Wikicup, something with a format I know I can work through), 2 Triple Crown lists, and tie-breakers. Wizardman and I have a loose idea for a long-term topic on tie-breaker games. Staxringold talkcontribs 19:47, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • What do you think a 2009 Philadelphia Phillies season topic would have? Would it need every player on the roster? Trying to think how we could use 2009 World Series. Maybe an 09 World Series topic with the Phillies and Yankees season articles, the CSes and DSes, and the tie-breaker? Just throwing ideas out there. :) Staxringold talkcontribs 20:04, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • That being said, we should. I created a dabpage before the 09 postseason with the hope of later expanding it into a summary article, but it was turned into a redirect without much discussion. KV5 (TalkPhils) 20:29, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • For the 2009 season, since I'm here, to get a featured topic I'd say you would need all the players, season, WS, and NLC/DS, and probably the manager too. Needless to say, a hell of a lot (I have a similar thing planned and it came up to 45 articles), so a 2009 World Series topic would be much more feasible. No problem at all. I was surprised I hadn't fixed that missing link myself. KV5 (TalkPhils) 19:55, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi K5, cd you revisit above FLC to see if your concerns have been addressed? Sandman888 (talk) 15:39, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi KV5, you opposed the above list. The main concern was an arbitrary cut-off, which is traditionally done on football player lists. I took your concern to the wp:footy project here. Could you indicate whether your concerns has been met on the FLC, or if you have more, reg. the arbitrary cut-off, please indicate those at the footy talk page please. Sandman888 (talk) 15:00, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Roster project

I think it would be ballsy, and would set a standard for modern, long-term franchises (as opposed to the various short-term dead franchise rosters we have now). Assuming you went letter by letter to break up the work that looks like about 20 full lists (discounting the few letters with only a handful of guys) worth of work. Doable, but big. Staxringold talkcontribs 19:01, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Heh, that's why I referred to the Civil War page, which uses reasonable letter ranges. BTW, mind giving my DYK hook a look-see? I'm putting the finishing touches on an FP-hopeful of Johnny Evers (labeled by Bill James, I believe correctly, as one of the worst Hall of Famers ever, in thanks to a poem). Staxringold talkcontribs 19:48, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Working on another fun hook, I noticed a notable author for one of the sources so: Staxringold talkcontribs 19:22, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • No problem. Sometimes I wish I could get more interesting hooks. The Jocko Thompson one was probably the best so far, but I don't even remember some of my older ones. KV5 (TalkPhils) 19:47, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I take that back; Mike Cervenak was the best one. KV5 (TalkPhils) 19:49, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of Phi Kappa Psi brothers FLC

Hello, Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Phi Kappa Psi brothers/archive1 was listed 20 days ago, and is now also listed as one of the "nominations urgently needing reviews." So far four reviewers have weighed in. All objections have been met. There are two votes of support, and none opposed. As per The Rambling Man, "typically, although not prescriptively, Dabomb or I will look for around four votes of support." He also suggested that I contact "regular reviewers" such as yourself to see if you would be willing to comment. I'm happy to address constructive criticism. Hopefully upon resolving critiques, if you believe that the list is worthy, you will also grant support. Thanks, NYCRuss 16:59, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Albert Pujols

Not sure why my Pujols edits keep disappearing, but Albert is very active in the KFUO controversy and is THE major sponsor of the drive to eliminate the station's classical music format. So my edits have less to do with the radio station and more to do with Pujols' involvement in the community, which is why the controversy is noted on his page. Please let me know if this explanation works for you so that I may place the edits back on his Wikipedia page.
