Girlicious is an American girl group featuring Nichole Cordova, Natalie Mejia and Chrystina Sayers.[1] The group was originally formed by Robin Antin, creator of the Pussycat Dolls, from the CW reality TV show "Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious". Their self-titled debut album was released in Canada in mid 2008, reaching number 2 on the Canadian Albums Chart. They are currently working on their sophomore studio album titled "Rebuilt". The first single, titled Over You, was released on January 5, 2010. [2] The second single, titled "Maniac" will be released as the first worldwide single.
Former member Tiffanie Anderson departed the group in mid 2009. A number of reasons have been cited for her departure. These reasons include the switch to a new record label that wanted an image change for the group, different ethics, as well as not seeing eye-to-eye on certain issues.[3] Girlicious was originally signed to an American deal with Geffen Records, however as of early 2009, they are currently signed to Universal Music Canada.
Career
2007–2008: Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious and "Girlicious"
Before the airing of the series premiere of the show, the girls were already chosen for "Girlicious" and had started recording their debut album in late 2007. Originally the group was to be a trio, but was conceived as a quartet through a final decision of creator Robin Antin on the show's season finale. Thus far, they have received greater attention and major success from Canadian audiences, receiving platinum certification in Canada for their debut album "Girlicious". The group was nominated at the Teen Choice Awards for "Breakout Group" of the year, and Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious was nominated for "Reality: Music Competition" in 2008.[4]
2008–2009: Tiffanie Anderson's departure and a new direction
Since mid 2009, rumors spread regarding Tiffanie Anderson’s place in Girlicious, and whether she was still currently a part of the group. Speculations of Anderson’s departure were sparked primarily by their MySpace account, when all photos of Anderson were completely removed from the site, along with the removal of Tiffanie’s alias from their main quote altogether.[5] Furthermore sparking rumors of Anderson's displacement from Girlicious was a Twitter update from Robin Antin, which read: "Girlicious fans! Nic, Nat, & Chrys are getting ready to record a new single, new video, & tour the world!" [6]
It was officially confirmed on June 11, 2009, via a YouTube video upload from Anderson’s official YouTube channel, that she is no longer a member of Girlicious. In the video, Anderson cites changes with their new record label and sound, stating: "Robin Antin and the label were looking for a new direction for the group" ... "they were looking for the group to not be [urban] any longer". She also speaks of personal differences between some of the girls, saying the group was not seeing eye-to-eye on a lot of things: "a couple of the girls and I didn't have the same values or the same morals - causing a huge conflict in the end of it all." [3]
On Sunday, June 21, 2009 Girlicious appeared live at the 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Canada as nominees and presenters. The group won the award for "Most Watched Video" for "Like Me". Their video for "Stupid Shit" came in at second place. Robin Antin officially confirmed during a press conference for the MuchMusic Video Awards that Anderson was no longer part of the group.[7]
2009-present: New label, new sound and second studio album
In 2009, the group went into the studio to start recording music for their second studio album intended for an international release unlike their debut album which was only released in Canada. In December 2009 the group announced they had moved from Geffen Records and that they had signed a record deal with Universal Music Canada. The sound for the album will go in a more "Pop" direction, and further away from the Hip-Hop/R&B sound featured on their first album.
The groups first single titled Over You, was sent to Canadian radio stations on December 25, 2009. The song was released to Canadian iTunes on January 5, 2010. [2] "Over You" debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 at #52 where it reached it's peak. The song peaked at #57 on The Hits Charts (Airplay): Top 100 Singles and #52 on Canadian Hot 100 [8]
The groups second single titled "Maniac" was released to Canadian iTunes on April 6, 2010.[9] The Music Video was shot on April 6th in LA at an abandoned hospital.[10]. Because of the announcement of a new single, plans for a worldwide release and music video for "Over You" have been scrapped. Maniac is expected to be released the week of May 3rd, 2010. A 30 second preview of the video was released on YouTube on April 27, 2010. The video premiered on May 4th 2010. The video reached a high of #3 on itunes and the single reached #42 after the video was released.
