    Shortcuts

    Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

    After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

    Temporary full protection, Things are hotting up in Britain, the Prime Minister's just resigned and there are thousands of rumours flying round about the make-up of the new (coalition) Cabinet. I have done this for 1 week, as by then most positions in the new cabinet will have been officially announced.     • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page, click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page," which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.

    Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

    Fulfilled/denied requests

    Semi-protect. High level of IP vandalism; seems to be one individual rotating from multiple IPs (including at least one that was blocked). The signature seems to be giant red "Fuck You!" across the top of the page. If you look at the page history, most edits in the last week have been this particular type of vandalism or reversion of it. This edit in particular spooks me: the vandal knew exactly how many characters to remove to keep this from flagging on people's watchlists due to addition or deletion of article file size (a block may be in order as well, since this vandal seems to know how this project works). bahamut0013wordsdeeds 10:59, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporary full protection repeated spam edits. Repeated problem edits are by established SPA/COI editor (see User_talk:Art4em), so semi-protection will not work in this instance. Adding details of this editor's published workbook is a work-around to keep the content in Wikipedia following deletion of the full article Drawing Upon Art: Workbook for Gardner's Art Through The Ages (LG Williams), by the same editor.     Semi-protection. People keep making edits that the tour has two different North American legs back to back, but no sources suggest that. I have asked users on the talk page to provide sources and they don't. This page was protected for this very reason last week and no one responded and provided sources.     indefinite semi-protection vandalism - This is more a request for discussion than an outright request for protection, but I would like to know what admin opinion is on locking the past UFC event pages. Currently, for those who don't know, Ultimate Fighting Championship holds a pay-per-view event on average every three or four weeks. Now, periodically, we see random acts of vandalism such as IPs inserting their own names in place of the actual fighters, or stupid changes such as the last one made to this page (UFC 100) replacing "punch" with "Falcon Punch!" Now my opinion on the pages is that they should be locked. As they are past events, no more information is going to come out about them. Once the event has finished, all that needs to be placed is the pay-per-view purchase figures and bonuses etc. Once these are done, there is no more information that is worthy of inclusion in these pages. Be that as it may, it seems pointless to me to leave them open to IPs attacks that may go unnoticed for a while due to clogged up watchlists.

    I propose (if any admin has the patience to pick off (block) a couple of pages at a time) that we lock any pages for events that are older than a year (e.g. UFC 1 to 98 ish). Each page is easy to find; it's just "UFC" followed by a number and I think the last event from about 12 months ago was UFC 98, give or take.     Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. UFC 100, for instance, has only seen two instances of vandalism in the last two weeks. If other articles are more frequent targets, then repost them here & we can consider them on a case-to-case basis. Watchlisting is probably the best course of action.     Temporary semi-protection, Page is subject to fairly regular vandalism or GF inappropriate edits, particularly in the case of IP User:193.62.51.5 from the university network which has has now been blocked several times.
